Yakima Bike Rack

Has anyone installed/modified a Yakima Bike rack to the top stock crossbars of our 4Runners?

The rack mounts to stock Yakima round cross bars and I was wondering if anyone found a way to make them fit our flat shaped one? Maybe some sort of adapter?

Or as an alternative has anyone mounted the round Yakima bars to our rack without buying additional towers.

I just need to get the bike up north for my daughter for school so nothing permanent..

Bike on top of car

For a one time use I'd put a blanket or moving pad on the roof and tie the bike down really well with rope. You need a pad to keep from scratching the roof with the pedals and other parts. Or take the wheels off and put it inside the vehicle.

I have a Yakima rack that slides into the trailer hitch receiver. Very simple and it keeps the bike down low. It bends upward behind the door and hangs the bikes by the frame from a padded crossbar. It hinges down so the rear hatch can be opened. I've had mine for 20 years or more. Nowadays the racks are more complicated, hinged devices and are a bit expensive compared to what I bought. If I had to buy one today I'd rather make one like what I have. Wish I had a photo to show you.

I wouldn't consider mounting a bike upright on top of an SUV. It all gets too tall and won't go into a parking garage or under trees.
 
I have a solution I used in my 2001 which should work on my 2016. Bought what is now called a Blockhead fork mount and attached it to a 2x6. Flip the rear seat down and it allows you to store the bike inside the truck and remove the mounting stuff if not needed. Better security and no chance of slamming bike into something overhead
 
Thanks, I think the Mighty Mount may be the answer. Do you happen to know what the part number is or which one fits our crossbars?

I just received the Yakima HighRoad in the mail. That is that up-right wheel mount one, as opposed to the fork-mount.
I’ll have a pic tomorrow but I don’t expect any issses based on the research I did.
 
Its been so long sorry but they give you adapters work well & I have the old yakima bike rack both wheels stay on ! Think they have one for round & one for oval which our is .

For one time use. I would just take both wheels off and put the whole bike inside the 4runner with you. much more secure. And less worries when you stop and have to take your eyes off of the bike. like pit stops to refuel, bathroom (#2), sleeping.

Anyone on the Mighty Mount part number that fits our bars?

Hey!
So I just got the Yakima Highroad. It's their new roof single-bike mount. It holds the front wheel of a bike, but only 26-29" wheels, so it won't hold your kids' bikes.
It was super easy to install, just follow the video on their website. The rubbery straps will wrap around just about any cross-bar. I attached mine to the OEM cross-bars.
Everything works out really well but there are tow issues:3
- First, even my lightweight hard-tail gets heavy when you have to press it over your head.
- Second, the 4Runner with an adult bicycle on the roof is damn tall. Like 12 feet tall, so watch those clearances.
- Second, the factory cross-bars bow up. That makes them stronger. But that also makes a rack like this slightly tilted. Unless there is something wrong with my cross-bars, but I don't think so.

Wow that is super tall...I would be really hesitant to put a bike on the roof of my 4Runner. I managed a sporting goods store through college and I saw a lot of wrecked boxes and bikes that hit something (garage doors, parking garages, trees).

I always put mine inside my car by flipping the small section of the rear seat down just to be safe.

Hopefully it works out for you, just keep your eyes peeled for obstacles!

I have two kids and my wife is not a light packer. I have a hitch bike rack, too. It's a four-bike rack but when you bikes are oddly shaped (kids bikes) that last bike hangs on there kinda iffy... chance the roof one.

Yes, I'll be careful. I drive large vehicle often so I'm very conscious of the height issues.
 
Nice rack. The one I have is old and its built for the round bars. I just need to get the bike to my kids college drop off. Putting it in the car is not an option because it will be loaded with her stuff.

I bought a second carriage bolt and I think I'm going to just get the 27H Mighty Mount and hope it fits. If anyone can verify the part member I would appreciate it...…………

Yakima round to oval

They use to sell adaptors that converted round to different shaped profiles. I found one that was close enough that worked when I had a gen 4 4Runner. It was just the part that wraps around the crossbar. Later on my different cars, I found a flexible metal strip at homedepot with holes in it.. I wrapped around the crossbar and carriage bolted to the rack. I found it where they had air ducts and fittings at HD.

Are you mounting the round Yakima bars on top of the 4r crossbars ? I just used the mighty mounts universal to bike rack on stock crossbars , never had a problem & my bike is old steel frame .
 
I'm mounting the Yakima bike rack to the stock 4Runner crossbars. The bike rack is the old style with the fork locks built for the round bars. I'm guessing it is about 15 years old
