IMO if your going to spill anything with a 96-98 cupholder it was going to spill anyways. I've jumped curbs and gone over crazy terrain without any problems. I love having my a/c on keeping my drink cold while sitting in stop and go traffic. Especially soda cans. I have not had any drink spill what so ever. They do look flimsy though. If I'm doing any crazy off road driving I'll just buy a T4R.ORG aluminum bottle :bigok:


I'll get a video of my first trail ride with two sonic rout 44's in the cup holder.

I'd love to see it since there was no way pop wasn't coming out of the can on a trail but with the cupholders with a bit more closer to center of gravity it makes a huge diff and simply doesn't compare.

I've owned a '94 PU and my '97 with the same cup holders and they simply are crap and if you haven't had a major spill it's just a matter of time since a pothole ruined my day once and in the winter that heat isn't helping keeping my pops cold and it's a dumb design to cover the HVAC controls.

I've had my 4runner for a month and I can adjust all my hvac controls easily with drinks in the way, but if your not familiar with the controls it can be a pita. I normally don't use the vent selection during the winter, defrost/floor is normally the most efficient.
 
So...are people just voting for whatever year they happen to have? ;)

I'm happy with my '99 but I wouldn't have been unhappy with a 2000.

Kind of wish I had the multi-mode 4wd of the 2001-2002 models, BUT, I wouldn't trade my high-riding suspension and rear locker for it. Also not crazy about the big fender flares on the later 3rd gens, the non-flared wheelwells on my '99 make my tires look bigger, especially with the running boards removed.

Anyone know the production/sales numbers for the various 3rd gen years? I see so many 99's on the message boards that I get the impression (rightly or wrongly) that there are more 99's than any other model year in the 3rd gen lineup.
 
thats right, down hill from the 96. Everyone know the 96 is the holy grail of 4runners est if u have a Black limited like i do :hiding:. they were all made 4runnin in the back of nowhere or whereever you wanted to take it, but the 96 is where it started and i hate those bumper that stick out like a granny bottom lip
 
You can retrofit an older bumper on a '99+ but all the other mid gen upgrades add up to a lot of work to upgrade on an '98 or older model.
