I have a 3rd gen but this is kinda the toy I've always wanted to have...

1991 Toyota 4Runner $2,499 - Bailey's Auto Sales - Cloverdale, VA 24077 Dealer

1. You can tell it has sat under a tree or shed because the hood and rear panels are more faded than the rest I've heard people say a good wax can bring the color back is that true?

2. The second gens have worried me ever since my parents had a '95 (auto) that repetitively blew head gaskets but my dad has a '92 pickup (5spd) with 200k on it that has never given us any trouble, so do would this vehicle be more like the '95 and give me trouble or be reliable like my dad '92?

No one can tell you if its going to be reliable. Previous owner could of babied it or trashed it ( which is what i see on most 4runners now)

Get the vin, see if it had the recall done, bring a mechanic with you (a toyo guru preferably) and let him drive it. No one can tell you without ripping the engine apart.

Looks like a nice bye, Not to sure if you will be able to get the shine back, you know the dealer has already tried. All you can do is give it a try or walk away. If you can take it out for a nice long test drive, and watch the temp and oil press gauges. if it does not keep a even temp it will have cooling problems and a head gasket will blow, if the oil pressure drops way low then motor may we wore out. other then that its a craps shoot just like any other used car.

Well this kindve a buy and flip quick, wheel and deal place.. he likes to sell to the mexicans but im just wondering if the 5spd is as likely to have problems specifically head gasket problems as a the autos?

i'd be willing to betyou could find one better for less money. That's the same one I have and I got mine for $1300. Dealer had just taken it in on a trade.

As to the question about manual vs. auto on the head gasket issue, it won't make a bit of difference. The problem is the exhaust system, and they both use the same design. The way I read about it, Toyota planned to use an asbestos gasket because they knew about the excessive heat issue where the manifold connector wraps around the heads, but once asbestos went on the politically-incorrect list, they made do with what they could (cheaper to change gaskets than exhaust systems, at least up front--oops!)...and blew up gaskets right and left. There's no good way of knowing if one's going to go--I've had three 2nd Gens, put plenty of miles on them, and only one blew out on me. You just gotta roll the dice, I guess.
