what i did before i got my first one (I've had a few more since) is i went to a local shop, and asked to sit in on someone getting a tattoo done, watch the design process, layout, tattooing, and initial care. i was able to get a real good feel for how the artists are, and i gained a lot of trust doing that. the biggest bonus from it all is that i found out my go to artist drives a 4runner
