Now, I am NOT talking about trying to get some killer ARB, winch enables body armor.

Just something a little more industrial looking than the factory fat-lip on my 99 limited.

No need for any bells and whistles at this point, as I have no real plans to do any wheeling in this rig just yet.

Ford guys swear by cardboard. Just don't drive in the rain...or hit anything, an you should be good they say.

The super budget is a 2x4 tube with winged corners... then make some brackets. Go to the scrap yard and it could be sub 100 bucks.
 
Find a friend that can weld. It took me a weekend while doing other things to build mine then used bedliners to paint it. I'm building the rear bumper now and have about $60 invested in the whole project with lots of metal left over!

 
I would like to know if anyone has used that kit? I know a few welders but have access to a welder so maybe I could tack weld it then have someone else finish the welding.
 
You can replace the fat lip bumper

with a earlier lower profile 96-98 bumper that will increase your approach angle. Added coolness factor if you paint it
 
You can make the 96-98 bumper approach angle even better with the plastic off.

I added a piece of 3"x1.5" rectangular steel to mount my lights. It saved my radiator on one occasion :0

Here's a comparison between the two. Mine on the left has 99 springs and 32" tires. The right one has 2000 springs and 31" tires

the trail gear tacoma bumper is pretty cheap and can probably be fit up to a 4runner if you have a little fab skills (I believe the front of the frame is a little different between teh 4r and taco).

Other than that, chop up your stocker, make your own, or whatever you feel like. Get creative!

You can take that bottom "fat lip" off of the 2000 also and have the same look you have. Only problem is no more turn signals. Unless you mount them under there somehow or wire them to your corner markers. Someone on here did it. But I forgot who

Just a side note, but I personally wouldn't use the ARB as the benchmark. I made my own "budget" bumper to replace the ARB I already had. The ARB destroys your approach angle and will flex into the body if you actually hit it.

Custom > ARB any day

I know, i did yhe receiver before the bumper and it does stick out WAY TOO far lol. I'm going to cut it down so i can just get to the pin hole.

Now I am derailing my own thread but I have a few dub questions -

#1. If my rig is a 99 limited, would I already have the springs that you mentioned you are running?

#2. What would I go about searching for in order to get the same front end look that you have going on... can't quite figure out your bumper setup. I understand the mounted steel, but not the actual bumper.

I built my bumper for 180$, plus the cost of the winch. I did all my own welding and plate cutting. Steel was sourced locally at normal retail cost. It's still incomplete in this picture.

Yes, you have the springs, but they are probably sagging with age. My springs have 10-15k miles.

You have a different bumper than me. You would need a 1996-98 bumper to make it look exactly like mine.
