Bed Liner for my rig

I'm tired of looking at my flaky clear coat. I thought about coating the whole rig in a bed liner because:

- it's rugged
- I don't have the time to wash and wax all the time
- it's...rugged


Any input for the DIY kits like Herculiner, Al's, LinerExtreme, SprayLinings, or Raptor?

I used a gallon of Black Raptor brand Bed liner to do the interior of my jeep. 6 years later I only had to touch up the spot were my feet are next to the pedals. Everything else is great. I'm gonna get a can of the tintable bed liner they sell so I can paint some sliders and an ARB bumper I have to match my 99.
 
I'd trust myself to do a better job with spray applications vs rolling. Tape everything off then spray away. I'd assume it's easier to get even. So you took out any carpeting and had a lined interior?

Yeah what was left of the carpeting. I used a roller and it turned out pretty good in there, there's no monster globs or anything it looks pretty even. For the sliders and bumper that I'm gonna do I was thinking of spraying them just cuz I can and then compare.


Edit: [MENTION=79826]absalom[/MENTION] posted a thread awhile ago of him and his buddy using monstaliner on his buddies 3rd gen. I thought it turned out pretty good.

Upol makes a nice 2K (paint with hardener) spray on kit. I just did the bottom half of my rig with it. I did my front bumper a little while back. Only thing that sucks is it has a 5-7 day full cure time. They do have colors to so you dont just have to do black, but stay away from tintable.

This is the 8 quart kit, i did my lower half and front and rear bumper with 4 quarts.

Why would you want to stay away from tintable? I have no experience with it yet so I just wanna know what I might be getting into.

All the reviews i have read said it doesn't tint well and the color doesn't stay. I have never tried it but that isn't something i would try without knowing it would work.

I sprayed the whole outside of mine with Monstaliner, never did a write up though. I went the spray route, which was easy to do. The most difficult part is the prep and masking. I went two tone, as to match the existing paint. I used Monstaliner's grey, which turned out fantastic. I opted to tint my own green, and had a body shop mix some tint for me. This part turned out terrible, now it should be noted that I did not use the recommended tint. The green turned out to be a candy, basically showing all the imperfections and sanding marks through the liner. I reordered more green for the truck, and will be using their green tint for round two.
 
I have a couple of friends that are avid gearheads and know much more than I do when it comes to cars (1 of them worked as a professional mechanic for ~5 years, and they both race autocross etc), and they both highly recommended against exterior bedliner coatings because they said once water gets in between the lining and the metal (which is fair to assume it will, esp. considering off-roading abuse), it can cause the metal underneath to rust much more easily as the water is trapped in there, and you won't know anything about it until a panel collapses.

Don't shoot the messenger... Curious what your thoughts are on this?
 
I used monstaliner around my fenders and rockers. Eventually the whole truck will be monstaliner when the original paint goes bad
 
absalom i did see that post, came out very nice. I wonder how long it'd take mt to completely take out lights, bumpers, etc. I was thinking of this as a weekend project.

as for curing, they're talking about stressing it out like throwing toolboxes in truck beds. once it's dry to the touch you can drive it around right? I can't be without it for a week.

As for the rust issue I'd assume that if done well, water shouldn't find it's way in.

We did the whole project in a day, and he was driving it the next day.

Get some friends to help, it'll make an already easy project even easier.
 
is there a common thinning ratio? Up here in the NW we have decent relative humidity, especially this time of the year
 
Monstaliner got back to me. They said coverage is roughly 60 sq ft per gallon with two coats, 30-40 mils and to use 4-6 ox of MEK as a thinning agent. So I'm comparing cost of Monstaliner vs Spray-lining.com. LinerXtreeme didn't get back to me on what coverage it was per gallon. I calculated 150 sq ft for my 4runner including bumpers and a slight estimation (actual measurements 110 sq ft) of overspray and extra spots.
 
I know that most people remove the handles and such, but I want my handles to get coated too. Being white, and choosing black for my coating, I don't want white handles.

Any special care needed for the plastic? I was just going to cover the lock holes with tape and go to town. I will be taping over lights, removing factory roof rails most likely, spoiler, and bug deflector. I will be coating my rear bumper (chrome) as well.
 
I'm also going to throw out design options.

1: EVERYTHING gets black lining
2: flares get spared (currently silver) and chrome rear bumper spared
3: everything but the rear chrome bumper gets lined.
4: bright orange coating everywhere but flares and bumper, which will be black

4th option is a radical one, and i'm leaning away because tintables cost more of course.
