5th Gen Calipers

...Sorry guys, this mod does JACK S++T to prevent stuck calipers. To those who say, "Because the hardware is bigger, I stop better". Whatever man.

Most of us did this mod b/c we ALREADY needed to replace the calipers and doing this is fine (for those of us who have Limiteds/Sports), but don't expect the stuck caliper problem to go away. It won't.

Good speed to those who did this mod and have/haven't had recurring sticky calipers.

Same here! I've had it with the swapping of the calipers numerous times already as well as jumping on the 5th gen swap hype. Moved on to a Wilwood BBK so hopefully that lasts (I hope so, I can't go back with what these babies can do).

After reading a ton of posts about stuck pistons not only in our trucks but also other vehicles and analyzing my calipers and their stuck pistons, it appears the issue starts with corrosion from the outside making it's way inside. At least this is the only thing that I found to be the issue and after cleaning out the grease and rust, the pistons did not become stuck again until a year after.

I've noticed that on every piston that seized/froze, there was always rust making it's way under the piston boots (through the metal) and inside between the pistons and caliper's piston cylinder. It doesn't take much for a piston to seize/freeze especially with such tight tolerances AND heat. Heat will cause parts to expand and change tolerances.

Also I've gone away from any Permatex product regardless if it states "Synthetic", "Ceramic" or any of their marketing lingo because I've noticed that any of their stuff typically dries out and turns into a thick paste from heat in very little time usually a few months. Found that much of the stuff you find out there today is made "eco friendly" and it really doesn't work thus not understanding how having to replace calipers and fixing brakes every so often is eco-friendly at all.

I bought some Toyota Rubber Grease, Made in Japan, under P/N: 08887-01206. This is the pink grease that I used to see in earlier versions of the 4th gen calipers but after upgrading to the 5th calipers, I noticed Toyota switched over to Silicon grease. The Toyota Rubber Grease also dries just like the Permatex stuff and eventually the rust invades the grease and turns it into a thick paste seizing the pistons or making it hard for them to retract. Toyota doesn't list a silicone grease like the one used in the 5th gen calipers. I'm guessing it's there to pass the typical warranty period and then you're on your own. You'd think they'd want to ensure you get the most out of your parts but have to remember, their a business, and the one way they get your hard earned money is through parts.

Eventually I came across a product made by 3M called 3M 08946 Clear Silicone Paste. You can find this on Amazon and the reviews will tell you it's good stuff. This is a clear silcone paste that is designed for high heat applications, difficult to wash out and doesn't degrade like the aforementioned products do. There's also AGS BK4 Brake Lubricant also found on Amazon, looks similar but I haven't had much experience with it but heard it's also a pretty good lubricant. I'm going to trust 3M more considering they have over 500+ reviews currently sitting at 5 stars.

When I did my 5th gen caliper upgrade, I added some of this silicone paste to the insides of the caliper piston bores, the pistons themselves and then the insides of the piston boots or underside if you want to call it that and after installing the piston boots, I applied some to the outside of the boots, the C-ring, and around the metal parts around the piston boots.

These are procedures that I found either in the Toyota Factory Service Manual as well reading up posts of others being able to solve these types of seizing issues. The key is to put a nice thin amount but not too much. Putting more silicone paste doesn't help but actually makes it worse. Remember tolerances are tight and this is a sealed system.

Also put some silicone paste around the bleeder valves' thread before threading them in as well the thread on the hard brake lines going into the back of the calipers. This will disperse water as well salty water from getting in easily.

I also painted the insides of my pistons to prevent any corrosion from starting inside there plus added some silicone paste to repel any water, etc. It all seems overkill but when you're dealing with salty roads in the winter, you'll definitely appreciate doing these simple steps.

Oh and one last thing, I ended up doing a complete flush of my brake system with MOTUL DOT 3 & 4 synthetic brake fluid. I've read too many posts about how typical DOT 3 brake fluids just don't do it justice and pull in moisture from the air (the brake fluid reservoir is vented) and it mixes in with the oil. But also how typical DOT 3 brake fluid doesn't withstand as much temperature as the synthetic DOT 3 & 4 stuff does. So far I've been on MOTUL brake fluid for about 2 years in one of my other vehicles and the brakes work perfectly. On my 4Runner, it's the same effect, no complaints at all.

Make sure that when you flush the brake fluid not to run out or you will be in for a long day of getting the air out of the system. There is a way to do it without the CONSULT 3/III, simply go on a gravel road and hit the brakes a few times then bleed each caliper a few times, add more fluid and hit the gravel road again. Eventually all the air will come out. The air is trapped in the ABS portion of the brake system. Normally bleeding doesn't get it out or at least it never worked for me.

So far it's been almost a year and I'm loving the 5th gen brake upgrade. In the spring I'll be doing my yearly brake refresh to see how they're holding up. Usually I sand the pads to get rid of any hard spots, clean the groove as well. Apply silicone to the boots and inside the pistons. Clean up the pins as well.

One of my next mods will be to get some stainless steel pins made. They're only used to prevent the pads from falling out, the pads rest on the calipers during braking so there's no worry about stainless steel being an issue.

Hope this helps you guys and puts an end to the BS we've been dealing with.

P.S., Iron calipers tend to experience these issues more, iron rusts fairly quickly and reacts more to water and salt especially. My other vehicle has aluminum factory calipers and to this day from 2012, I have never touched them. So that should shed some light as to what Toyota should've done in the 5th gen essentially but what can I say.

- If you have the 13WG (SR5) caliper, you will need to cut or swap out your brake dust shield for a larger one from either the 4th gen or 5th gen 4Runner
- If you have the 13WH (Sport/Limited) caliper, your brake dust shield is big enough to clear the 4th/5th gen 338mm rotors
- The 5th gen 4Runner front dust shield was redesigned so it has openings for air to enter must easier and recommended

* I find to prefer these simply because they still use metals in the pads such as copper and wear evently compared to the 5th gen pads made by Advics

* These tend create light and dark streaks on the rotor. I'm guessing the compounds in the Advics pads are not well mixed. These have less to no metals used per a discussion I had with a Toyota parts person. They stated that copper is being eliminated from pads to lessen the impact on the environment.

REAR ROTOR COMPARISON:

NOTE: Due to the difference in hub hole diameter size between the 4th and 5th gen rear rotors, use the 4th gen rear rotor in order for it to center properly. That is the only difference between the two generations. Using the 5th gen rotor will cause the rotor to shift causing it to grab the parking brake shoes causing a clicking sound. This will eventually ruin your parking brake. Some members have stated that the studs centre the rotor; that is incorrect in the sense that the studs only centre rims using the OEM lug nuts. The holes in the rear rotors for the studs have a bigger diameter than the studs and if the centre bore of the rotor is bigger than the hub on the vehicle, then the rotor essentially "floats". Once the brakes are applied the rotor is shifted/dragged out of place and basically wobbles hitting the parking brake. It will keep shifting in and out of centre. Some have tried to centre the rotor by hand and put on the wheels gently..unfortunately the amount of weight that is transferred to the rotors will cause them to shift. Torquing the lug nuts to sandwhich the rotors better will only cause warping of your rotors or worse, your studs will snap off. Don't risk your life over a few dollars. There's no gain with the 5th gen rear rotors as the only differene is the bigger diameter hub hole.

Folks that have replaced their Centric calipers, are those the "Posi Quiet" versions that come with their Zinc Dichromate finish (or O.E. colored powder coating), that are failing quick?

When I did mine (July 2018), Centric did not have any coated caliper for this application. At least RockAuto didn't have any listed.
 
For those that care, Rockauto is now showing a NEW front caliper by Raybestos but only for 13WG castings. $90 each with no core, certainly seems better than a reman unit that lasts a couple of years at best. I'm getting some front drag (based on temp measurements, no vibration) so ordered them to see if they hold up better than the Centrics on it now.
 
I understand that 5th gen 14WB calipers ( front ones) has 14mm mount bolt hole, compare to 14WA caliper with 12mm hole and that it is not a direct swap.
But anyway, I have bought 2018 5th gen 4Runner with 9.000 miles on it 14WB calipers on eBay for $207 each and installed them on my 2007 4Runner.
Calipers came with all hardware and pads and looked like new.
I drilled holes in steering knuckles with 12.2 mm drill bit and then cut new threads using 14mm x 1.5 taps. Now I can use any kind of calipers because I can simply drill bigger holes on either 13WG/H or 14WA.
I installed OEM rotors that I've bought on eBay for $153 set. (I've done buying all that Centric and other aftermarket crap).
All in all, together with rear 5th gen brakes ( used with 30.000 mile on them $70.99 each) and 04466-AZ103 pads I am pretty happy and relaxing now. I did not even expect that result would be so good.
And I also had to buy special mounting bolts. I bought them in Crown Toyota dealership. Part number is 90105-A0336. Metric 14X1.5 with 19 mm head and 35mm body ( thread) length. About $10 for set of 4.

Here to report my 5th gen Centric calipers from Rockauto are seized up after ~2 years.

For anyone doing this, I highly suggest going with a local store (Advance/Auto Zone/Napa) and buying replacements with a lifetime warranty...even if you go back to the 4th gen calipers.

I just picked up 2 front 5th gen calipers from Auto Zone for ~$150 after cores.
 
Thanks for posting. I kind of suspected this. Sad really. I did local stores with lifetime for that reason. Good to know.

My thoughts exactly. I had my LF 5th gen seize up after two yrs, with less than 20k miles on it...surely my RF is on the way out. That's what you get for remans though.
 
I live in Eastern Washington State. Chemicals used on the roads in the winter months are really hard on the underside of the rig(2009 SR5). I try to keep the underside as clean as I can by using a carwash but lots of rust anyways. I ride motorcycles as long as the weather will allow so my 4Runner only has about 65,000 miles on it. I've gone through three sets of calipers.

From what I've read here, the 5th gen parts are a little better but still the problems remain. Maybe next time around I will spend the big bucks and go with an aftermarket upgrade(SOS, or RR Racing). Buying new calipers and other parts every 20,000 miles is getting old. Seems like there has got to be something out there that will last longer.

Does having the 14BD in the rear of my 4th gen mean I have 319mm calipers in the back?

Ive looked underneath my Limited and know I have the 14BD rear calipers, but havent looked at the front. From what I could gather from other research, the front will either be 13(WH/WL/WG) with the 13WH being the larger 339mm and the other two being 319mm. I am confused by the For 14BD because I am assuming that it means 4th gens with rear 14BD calipers will have front that also have 319mm. Though, once I am off work, I can just look at them myself and clear up all the confusion I am bringing on myself
