One of the projects on my to-do list was to replace the o-rings in the oil cooler and filer mounting base on the side of my 3RZ.

BTW, I own the twin to your 4runner, only in silver.

What made you think of replacing the o-rings and hoses in your oil cooler? Were there symptoms? It makes me wonder if I need to do this to my 4runner.

Hey Durwin, I do appreciate the kind feedback!

I had noticed the mounting o-rings were seeping a bit. When I studied the diagrams and realized there were internal o-rings I figured I'd just shotgun it. I don't have evidence of leaks but the original seals were hard and brittle for sure.

Agreed! There are a few builds on here that I use as references for upgrades/mods/maintenance items that I've got saved. JZiggy's is one of those builds. He's also helped me out with a rear hatch stop and hooked me up free of charge, so is a stand up guy in my book! :tea:

Mini update... Got a few hundred 4x4 miles so I changed the 80W-90 in the front diff to synthetic. We'll call this broken in

Pardon my complete ignorance, but can you explain why you switched to manual front hubs? Are they somehow more robust/reliable than the originals?

No pardoning required... it's a forum after all!

The manual hubs allow you to disconnect the front driveline from the wheels. Reduces wear and tear on the CVs, allows you to lift without worrying about about busted CV boots, and reduces drag slightly. It also lets you use 4LO in high traction situations like steep driveways. I also have a limited slip differential in the front and it plays more nicely with manual hubs.

I think you explained this to me once, but I forgot - what does this really mean?

I believe it means he can use 4Lo for situations where he wants more torque while essentially just using rear wheel drive, without worrying about being on pavement, because his front hubs are disconnected.

Interestingly I notice that according to the owners manual the multimode transfer cases can also use 4Lo with the center diff unlocked, essentially providing the same capability (using 4lo on bare pavement).

I see - but what's wrong with putting it in 4LO on dry pavement? Is that a no-no for some reason? I've seen the warnings against engaging the e-locker on dry pavement, but not 4LO.

On the '99 and lower models (someone correct me if I'm wrong), when you shift it into 4wd (Hi or Low) the transfer case locks the front and rear drive trains. This will cause binding in your drive train if your front and rear wheels are not on a slippery surface (pavement) potentially breaking your transfer case. It basically locks your front and rear differentials together. The 2000-2002 models have a multi-mode transfer case that allows you to unlock the front and rear drive trains, giving you an additional AWD option when on pavement.

Traditional transfer case in 4LO is a no-no because it binds on dry pavement, specifically while turning. Multimode w/ unlocked center diff allows the front and rear driveshafts to rotated independently so there’s no binding, aka AWD.

Manual hubs (unlocked) with the transfer case in 4lo allows you to essentially use 2WD in low gear (2LO) for better torque to the ground at lower speed. Good for a steep driveway or boat ramp, etc.
 
Thanks guys, that makes sense. But the owner's manual recommends engaging the 4WD every once in a while for a few miles (presumably on dry pavement is OK). So is this only a concern when in 4LO (or L4, as Toyota calls it), not in 4HI (H4)?

It's a concern in both 4Hi and 4Lo, but as long as you're going straight and not doing turns you're fine to do this on pavement. It's when you're turning and the front and rear drive trains are then spinning at different rates that this becomes and issue. You definitely want to avoid that.

I'd use 4WD (Hi or Lo, doesn't matter) on a boat ramp... the rear tires are probably in the wet and front traction would be helpful.

The '01/'02 4WDs allow for 4LO-unlocked, the '99/'00 Limited 4WD doesn't allow for it in stock form.

True, 4HI/LO is probably fine if it’s wet since it allows the tires to spin instead of bind.

Good info on the multi mode case differences. I’m not up to par on the nuances since I have a j shift manual t-case. So the 99/00 have the center diff locked if it’s in 4HI/LO by default? Not selectable?

Instead of a switch on the dash that the 01/02's use to lock the center diff, the 'switch' is engaged by moving the shift lever from the 2Hi/4Hi-u position to the 4Hi-L position - so there is no way to get the lever to 4Lo without engaging that switch. I'd imagine (no personal experience) that you could re-wire that switch to a dash switch to make it a separate operation. Not sure if the 4WD computer would get confused...

Had a little fun fitting a Thule 555 fairing in front of my Antero rack. The rack on its own doesn't make any noise but sometimes I hear it with my gas cans up there. Hoping to cut down on drag a bit and look cool like all the Subarus running around here with ski mounting crap all over their roof racks.
