Fridge/Freezer - Convince Me

Think I've decided to go with ARB or Dometic. Now the question is which size I should go with. Would like it to still be able to fit under the OEM cargo cover.
 
I have a dometic fridge and absolutely love it. I use my 4Runner as my daily and the fridge comes in handy when running around town or just stocking things like lune, bottled water, cold brew, etc...After having one for the last year, I couldn't imagine not having it.

no dice man. if you havent noticed the rona affect makes certain things sell really well. and this is one of them. ive been looking to swap out my 65 for a 55 and the best you can do is waiting for rei to do their annual 20% off voucher for one full priced item. then you gotta pray they have it in stock.
 
The Massimo coolers just went on sale at Costco. I picked up a CX50 for $70 less than normal price. I figure for the amount of money saved, its worth taking a chance on the quality. They are very well reviewed and Costco has a great return policy. Now to find a decent affordable power bank. :typing:

I got this same one a few months ago and just been testing it at home. For $270 plus taxes I love it. Cools down super quick too. I'll be pairing it with a Bluetti power station for future trips!

That Massimo looks super affordable.

I would like to see a technical deep dive to show what brands like ARB are doing to justify the added cost.

Do you guys have the ability to meter power consumption? I would love to see how much power it consumes over a 24 hour period at an ambient temperature of about 75-80F

Thanks, not too far off from an ARB 50. That said, it's only part of the equation as it's only represents the load when the compressor is running. What really matters is the duty cycle.

As an example, A fridge with good insulation might run less than one without. So even if they both consume 45 watts when running, one will use less power because the cycle rate is lower.

If you have a more efficient compressor, perhaps it cools faster and shuts off sooner, even though it uses 45 watts as well.

That’s usually why I do a 24 hour consumption test to see its actual power usage. I did that to my ARB 50, it uses about 357 watts hours over a 24 period. Or about 30 amp hours for your 12v guys. Test conducted at 75F ambient with water bottles in the fridge.

To give an idea of runtime... Odyssey Extreme 31 holds about 1200 watts hours of juice, but not all of it is usable if you want to keep the battery healthy. At 70% usage, it runs the fridge for about 2-2.5 days (at 75-80F ambient). In summer months and with the greenhouse effect in the car, it will most certainly be less.

It would be interesting to see a test with and with out the insulating jacket.

Figured I share this about my Massimo Cooler. My Bluetti is able to tell me some info here.
This is at room temperature and been off for a week. This is also with the DC outlet.

This is with the AC outlet. It hovers around the 70 watt area but after a few minutes it's ramped up to the 80s.

Doesn't look like it displays the metered consumption, just the live load.

Would be really nice if these units showed watt hours, not just watts.

How much capacity does that portable unit have and how much did it cost?
 
No ice (mic drop!).

I found to really good deals at JAX here in Colorado this year. The had two of the last gen CFX 40 and 50 for 30% off since they were displays and they were going to all new CFX3 coolers. I asked for an additional 10% off and they said sure as well as my 5% military so i got both with tax for about 1300. Deals are out there you just gotta search and not be afraid to rush on them. I literally left work for a "long lunch" that day to drive 2hrs and had them hold them.

Before doing dual batteries I only had a single 34R-PC1500T Odyssey battery and could go two days in CO heat on medium setting at 32 degree setting. I was still able to start after the two days static which is the most I usually do.

$1,300 is way more than you need to spend if you're just trying to run a fridge - a quality 100-ish Ah AGM or gel battery costs <$300 and a you can buy a 100W panel with charge controller for about $150 - add in misc. fittings and you can run a fridge in your vehicle -almost- unlimited for less than $500

OK. Finished running my test and here is what I did and my results:
(I opened the cooler a few times per day to mimic actual use)

July 23:
With cooler prechilled (on AC), with two water bottles and two gel packs frozen, I set the cooler to 25 degrees F and plugged it into the Jackery 500 charged to 100% at 10:40 am.
4:00 pm: Set to 32 degrees F.
8:00 pm: Jackery is at 77%.

July 24:
8:15 am: Jackery at 56%
10:45 am: Jackery at 51%
4:15 pm: Jackery at 41%
8:20 pm: Jackery at 32%
10:20 pm: Jackery at 28%

July 25:
7:40 am: Jackery at 9%
Plugged into Goal Zero 100 watt, but sky was pretty cloudy with sun only peeking out now and then.
11:20 am: 8%
12:40 pm: 7%
At this point, I started getting full sun and the Jackery shows 70 watts input from the GZ panel
3:20 pm: 13% (So the Jackery is being recharged while running the cooler at 32 degrees. I checked the temp occasionally and the cooler went as high as 36 degrees, and then back down to 32F. The rise in temp seemed to coincide with the low charge percentage on the Jackery, even though the Dometic display always showed over 13 volts.)
4:00 pm: 15%
4:30 pm: 18%
Unplugged cooler.
5:15 pm: 21%
Unplugged solar panel. End of test.

Please note that the cooler was in my garage (not air conditioned and 94 degrees outside during the day, down to about 78 at night), so in “the shade”.
The cooler was not full of food and drinks, so will be more efficient it was.
The water bottles were about still half ice the morning of the 25th, and the gel packs were still mostly frozen.
I ran the Dometic off of the DC output, NOT the AC.

Hope this information helps anyone considering a portable battery, fridge, solar panel, or any combination of those.

It's for anything around the house emergency wise as well. I wanted to be able to move it around.
When Hurricane Ike came through we were without power for a week. It's decent preparation for me. This came with two 100 watt solar panels as well so that will be helpful if ever.

For trips it'll be charging my camera batteries, phones, whatever else while keeping the cooler running as well throughout the nights.

I just really didn't want anything permanent in the vehicle such as a dual battery setup.
