2002 toyota 4runner sluggish acceleration on turns in AWD mode

When attempting to make a right or left turn from a complete stop I notice the SUV is extemely slow in accelerating. This happens frequently in AWD mode. I have not seen this problem in 2WD mode. I notice the needle in the RPM gauge going up but no change in the speed.
I have also noticed the traction control indicator next to the RPM guage flash.
None of these problem occur when driving in 2WD mode.

The SUV has 44,000 miles. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?

Are you on dry pavement? Your Trac system is engaging and cutting power. It does that when it senses spinning tires. If you're on snow, gravel or something like it, it's normal. If you're on pavement, it shouldn't do that.
