hey guys i just picked up a 3.4 sr5 4runner for 500$ the engine has a knock.
im wondering if on the 3rd gen you can drop the pan without pulling the engine out. i know on the 1st and 2nd you can, but i never worked on a 3rd gen.
im trying to decide if its worth rebuilding the lower end or just parting the truck out. opinion are desired.
$500?! Fix it and sell it. I flip cars all the time and rarely is it worth parting a vehicle out. Put a little time and money into it (tire shine helps too) and make a couple buck off it. Thats my opinion.
Yes, you drop the pan and install new bearings without removing the motor.
If it has a rod knock, you may have more problems down the road. A rod knock usually means someone ran it low on oil, oil pump is trashed, the oil was never changed properly, or the just completely ran the dog crap out of it.
thats what i thought ill just pull the engine out and put new bearings in. as long as i can get the kit with piston heads for less then 500 ill be happy.
the block has 250,000 miles im debating machining it or not i cant front the big money for a long block (1,900$) but i can throw a little now and do the block later
You have to drop the front diff to drop the pan. If you're just doing bearings it's the way to go. But if you're going to freshen up the motor and do the top end, just pull it.
