ECT Power Button - It must be fake.

I have a 00 2WD I-4. When I swich on the ECT Power button, I get absolutly no difference. Is there a difference that I am susposed to notice? Shifting? Power? I get nothing. Anyone else have similar response?:o

Put your ECT button in normal mode (not power mode). Take your truck out on the highway and start from a standstill. Accelerate rapidly and take note of the RPM each time your tranny shifts to the next gear. Keep speeding up until you kick into overdrive. Then stop.

Next, push in the ECT button to go into power mode. Start from a standstill and accelerate rapidly (try to accelerate at roughly the same rate as the first time) and take note of the RPM each time your tranny shifts to the next gear. Keep speeding up until you kick into overdrive.

In power mode, the RPM at which it shifts gears should be higher than the RPM at which it shifts in normal mode. Try it and post up your findings.

It'll make a difference going up long inclines when your truck is heavily loaded or towing a trailer. You'll get less annoying downshifting/upshifting/downshifting/upshifting while trying to maintain your speed.

Overdrive is different. With overdrive off, your torque converter keeps slipping. When overdrive kicks in, your torque converter essentially locks your engine to your tranny. In addition, when overdrive kicks in, your gearing in the transmission also changes so that your output from the transmission in RPM is higher than the output from the engine in RPM which is where the term OVERdrive came from.

If your ECT is working correctly, you should see what I described in my first post.

you will not feel any sort of boost or extra hp. all it does is change the shift points. It isnt a button to push when you need to make a quick getaway

drive normally with it off. notice the rpms it shifts at.

no repeat with it on, now notices the rpms it shifts at.

if there is no difference, drive your runner off a cliff and buy a new one. :awais:

and if you do drive it off a cliff, make sure you get some video of it.... ive always wanted to see that

i did noticed alittle differences from my 4runner. but with the ECT on, would it make a difference in the MPG? i usually run errands so i have loads of stuff in my car which i have it on all the time.

if it does change mpg..it would be maybe 5% less at best.

I find it funny now that I've just left my ECT on I've been netting 15 more miles to the tank at the halfway point than before and pretty much the same 15 by the end of the tank.

I would say that was due to less downshifting while accelerating. Since the RPM's stay higher, the need for downshiting decresases, which in turn uses less gas. On the flipside, I would think since the RPMS are staying higher, you are more inclined to go at WOT or have a heavier foot.

Glad you got some positive results!

I figured it was from that but I seem to not have the need to floor it as much but I think it's acceleration from a stop has an adverse affect on the mpg.

around town the thing i notice the most about ect on is less delay in downshifting.
as well with highway driving, while climbing hills the tranny downshifts before the motor bogs down thus reducing the downshift "jerk" and stays in 3rd until the road levels out and less load is on the tranny

by the way, with o/d off the torque converter does lock up in 3rd.

local, do you have a picture of your truck? im interested to see what those FJ wheels look like... send me a link in a PM as to not hijack this guys thread.... anyways, back on topic.... first tank of gas with ECT on... only problem is now its raining so i roll around in 4wd to combat the non road handling properties of the mud terrain.

nah uh!

When i press mine, I get an extra 30 HP!!!!

i do 0-60 in 20 sec with it on

with it off i do 0-60 in 22!!!!!

Add a spolier and you will get an extra 10HP.

With ECT on, I get 0-60 in 20sec and with it off, I get 20 in 0-60.

U need to keep it pressed down, once u release it, the ECT is off. U can also use ECT when u buy gas.

I started using the ECT about 5 fillups ago and my mileage per tank went up 25 miles more and several others have taken my advice and had good results but it seems to fit cetain driver's styles more than others so some report a couple MPG loss. My mileage was hitting only about 225 a tank w/o the ECT and after a few tanks with it on I'm averaging no less than 245 a tank with a couple over 250. This has never happend in the 19 months I've owned my '99.

i noticed the when my ECT was on, it revvs pretty high. which it usually shifts around 2500-3000 rpm. but normally without it, it shifts around 2500 or lower. or maybe i just have a heavy foot? haha. but ECT does work and it does give you more boost, not hp. quicker throttle whichi believe if it was on. but that's how i figure it.
