With the excellent used car market, my wife is getting out of her 2018 Mazda that we both hate and putting the 4runner into daily driving duty. Took it for an errand today and we had a stall at idle (stop sign).
So, backing up some and to Hopefully stop some of you from posting the Easy stuff:
We're at 201k mile now, at 195k I did a service that included cleaning the MAF and TB (disassembled IAC to properly clean that properly/thoroughly). I did a whole host of Other things at that time too (reman fuel injectors, TB, WP, all belts/idlers/VC gaskets, all new vacuum lines, etc...) All has been fine, and it cured a previous rough idle issue till today. I tested the IAC per the manual and it performs as expected, no codes at all. I actually took the IAC off again about a thousand miles later and cleaned it again plus replaced the gasket as the rough idle had gotten better but not great (I'm pretty sure it was the gasket) ~ another point of reference, I'm a motorcycle mechanic who has a HUGE background of experience cleaning carbs... My IAC was cleaned as well as one can be cleaned.
Today was an odd day from our normal routine, we ran a bunch of errands in Atlanta (*ugh*, hope to not do That again for a couple years). The stall happened with outside temps right about 90, just after sitting at idle for about 10 minutes with the AC on (and that following a ~15min in town drive). Idle was Very erratic from ~500 up to ~800 for that time. Pulled away, hit a stop sign and it just died. Restarted instantly and drive fine, but had rough idle the next several stops. Sucked for me because I just turned it off instead of enjoying AC. "Normal" is my wife commuting to work (~40 minutes of mostly highway), pretty much zero extended idle times.
After doing some reading tonight, seems like it's a confirmed IAC issue. I'm not going to play silly games with aftermarket stuff (would you with Your wifes daily?) so I'm going to buy the OEM IAC... but wondering if the TB comes with it. I doubt it as it's only $100 more, but stranger things have happened and I'd be fine with the slight additional cost.
So, does anyone know for sure? I'd rather not order one and try to return it (though my "local"... lol, 40 miles away) dealer might be fine with that, I'll call and check with them tomorrow.
