uphill speed up to 50 mph on my 2000 SR5 4WD

My 2000 SR5 4WD V6 can only reach 50mph when driving uphill to a ski resort near lake tahoe. The mileage is 96k and recently changed timing belt and tune-up. before the timing belt change and 90k service, I remembered that its climbing speed can only be 45mph this Summer when we were driving to the mountain on a local freeway but it is only about 5 mile long so I forgot to hack it afterward.

Any idea of the problem? Engine or transmission?

My mechanic is NOT kind of internet guy, Last time when the check engine light is on, he told me the code is P0171 and replaced the O2 sensor even though I told him Internet was telling to clean the MAF (Mass Air Filter?). When the check engine light went back on again and I sent the car back for the third time, he finally cleaned off a tiny hair which short bridged the two thin wires inside MAF.

So hope this time someone here can help me out again :D

what are your RPM?
and is it fine anyother time? flat/ down hill?

um... dude u really stumped me
 
RPM is at 2500 in the 4th gear manual and the gas pedal is in the bottom position.

On the flat or down hill, it is easy to get up to 80+ miles. I have never towed before so have no idea about that part.

Oh, the altitude is above 6000-8000 ft near Kirkwood, CA on route 88. I used to hear that high altitude might be a reason and that is why Subaru wins in Colorado mountains. But will 4runner be able to catch up with a mod or so?

I think your truck is fine mine has a hard time up around South Tahoe too, i just take it out of O/D and run near floorboard as needed, the engine temps never get above the half way mark. My friends 97 4runner auto V6 has a hard time also....One time i passed another 4runner in the passing lane in Tahoe and I had to floor it to pass him, i think having 5 people and fully loaded with snowboarding crap and clothes didn't help....i always seem to get good MPG (20MPG) on these trips so im pretty sure everythings running good.

so i guess there is really nothign to worry about, u could try down shifting. but dont run your RPM up too high for too long

Yeah, the 4runner do have a hard time going up in those mountain. When it is windy, you can run beside the truck. This is one of the reason why the SC is good for.

Does SC meant for Super Charge?
 
I do believe that I'm also holding steady at about 55 MPH at 2,500 RPM going through the passes. I've got an '02 Sport 4x4 with about 82,000.

I have a hell of a time keeping my truck at 65 going through Snoqualmie Pass (I-90), without revving the engine up past 3,000 RPM, taking it out of O/D, and engaging the ETC button. And Snoqualmie is relatively low at 3,000 feet.

So I think your truck is probably in the norm and you're safe (that is, until an overloaded semi comes barrelling up on you with his lights flashing and his horn blaring, but that's a different story).
 
Thanks for the posts! So it seems my 2000 SR5 V6 4WD is more like a working cow instead of a running horse on the mountain. Have to figure out a better approach to go through <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Pass>Donner Pass</a> on I-80. At <55mph, everyone is passing me there. :bash:

If 4th gear isn't enough to allow you to run at the desired speed, you can always shift down to third, (or an even lower gear) and let the motor rev a bit.

For the 5vzfe engine:

Peak torque of 217 lb-ft is reached @ 3600 rpm

Peak Horsepower of 183 is reached @ 4800 rpm
 
If it isn't the gears could it be the fuel pump? Maybe the engine isn't getting enough gas on steeper inclines?
