2001 Toyota Tundra 2WD vs. 1999 Toyota 4Runner 4WD - Help me decide, please !

Hello all,

I am giving my 1999 Toyota 4Runner, V6, 4WD, 171K miles, Automatic a serious thought about trading it to a 2001 Toyota Tundra 2WD, V8, 115K miles, few paints chips and bruises but nothing serious. It was well maintained.

He wanted to trade it for the gasoline price reason. I want the power but I feel sad to not have the 4WD option. Overall, I do not think it is a bad trade with the Tundra 60K plus or minus miles younger.

Opinions, ideas, anything will be appreciated.

Gas prices will go up again so keep the runner, you will miss 4wd, and the tundra looks ugly in that body style. If you want a pick up get a taco.

Wait, 4Runners get good gas mileage? :lol:

I'd keep the 4runner. Mostly because I would never ever ever own a pickup or SUV that was not 4wheel drive. I use it way too much. But if you don't, and having a pickup bed is something you like...the pickup would be a fair trade.

Just exactly what I thought ! I have been wrestling with these scenario and came across "oh, I should post at toyota-4runner.org and see what my fellow 4Runner owners would say. " And so far, I got my answer in few posts away, thank you guys !

I am keeping my 4Runner. I got sidetracked of the Tundra's power, but I realized my 4Runner is babied enough to let go of. I am shooting for 300K !

4Runner all the way !

Good to hear that you are keeping the runner! You probably would eventually miss having 4wd down the road anyway. Yup, the 4Runner will keep going past 300k for sure, as long as it's treated right. Anyway, if you want extra power, you could always consider a supercharger, as long as you are willing to pay for it.

I sold my '96 4x4 4Runner to finance the '95 T100 4x4.
I wish I never sold the 4Runner!!!

To make it worse, I sold it to my next door neighbor, so I see it everyday and it makes me sad...

I WILL have another, preferably a green 99 - 02 sport 4x4, that I will NEVER sell!

BTW, the T100 is also an awsome truck, I just miss my 4runner.

My Wife's 97 does not count as mine...

Glad you're keeping the 4runner.

If you ever consider getting a 1st gen Tundra Get a later 03 and up. 03 and up got the better transmission and larger brakes(front)
Or step up to an 04-06 with VVT-i
Tundra is a damn good truck especially in 4wd. I do miss mine and I usually got around city 16-18mpg I had a later 03 non VVT-i Access Cab TRD O/R edition.

Edit: Make sure it comes with a tow package from the factory. IIRC factory Tow packages comes with tranny coolers if you're going to tow

First, what is the general use for your vehicle? If it's for towing and hauling, Tundra wins, regardless of the 2wd. But if you're going offroad, 4wd wins. All depends on your needs, which no one addressed.

LMAO this is true!! Man I have seen it about 5 times happen at the launch, truck following the boat in lmao!

Although I never went into 4wd with the Tundra when I launched and grabbed a few times.

you forgot rust issues on the rear axle and and brake line problems due to rusting of the axle as well.......
