Rear Axle Seal Tool - Please post photo

There are lots of posts on replacing the inner rear axle seal. All of them mention different shade tree mechanic ways for removing the inner rear axle seal. I just did mine and what a pain. Let me say that again. What a pain. A traditional seal puller doesn’t look like it would work because of how far inside the housing the seal is. What I would like to see is a picture of the tool that is supposed to do this job. Anybody care to share?

And note if you’re planning on doing the job, get the right tool. Life will be much much easier.

I did mine a couple weeks ago. Yeah, it was hard going. I used this type of seal puller (pictured) and ended up slightly dinging the axle tube. I filed and sanded the edges down of the ding I created to try and get it as smooth as possible. Seating the new seal was a bit tricky too.

That's the type of tool that I kept seeing everywhere but it seemed pretty clear that if you used it you would ding things up unless you were lucky. Sorry to hear you had problems. I dinged up one very slightly using my rip the seal apart with vice grips method. The other tool shown (Seal Puller part #09308-00010)would work of course the picture shows it with a normal seal and not the evil recessed one on the 3rd gen. At least now I know what it is supposed to look like.

I pulled the illustration straight from the FSM, so it should be specific to the 3rd gen design

I did my seals on the weekend and they were easy to get out. Less than 30 secs per seal. I used a pair of multigrip pliers to grip the metal part of the seal and then twisted and pulled a few times. The twisting distorts the metal inwards and frees it up. The seal is getting thrown out so there's no issue with completely destroying it.

big Channel locks twist and pull. For putting it back in, i went to harbor frieght and grabbed their seal driver set. I then used a 25lb dumbbell and 2 perty good wacks and it was set perfect

Oh believe me, I destroyed the seal but it wasn't budging. I think, based on the design, it may have been the original seal. I was breaking off pieces of metal from the seal trying to remove it until it finally deformed enough and just popped out.

It's easy, use the axle. while taking it out, put it downward (or upward if you don't have a lift). The end of the axle is touching the inside of the seal while the side of the axle is touching the diff. housing. It acts like a big puller (or prybar) and works 99% of the time.

When I do them, it take about 20 seconds to remove the 2 seals after the axles are out.

I would make sure to put something under the axle or behind the seal puller. I also nicked the housing on mine with the seal puller. A block of wood would solve that

For getting it out, I just bent it with a punch and pulled out with large channel locks.

To get it back in, you can make something like I did... (I've used it like 5 times since owning 2 3rd gens)



The inner and outer diameters match the diameters of the seal. I just used standard hardware and it is close enough.

You are a genius! I wish I had seen this two weeks ago. Something tells me I'll need this sooner than later. What did it cost? All of $3.50. That's brilliant.

If you used a fully threaded bolt, you can put a bar further down the shaft to set the seating depth.
