Wow. I read through most of this today. Too bad I missed this when it actually happened, but this is amazing. I love the sound of the V8.

Otherwise, he will give me the engine and trans for $1500, but I'm sure it would be handy to have other parts from it. I work at a dealer so I've sourced engine and trans for cheaper than that, just trying to weigh my options.
$1500 for the motor and tranny is great. That is an awesome price.

Get the complete motor - ac compressor, manifolds, power steering pump, alternator and all the msc nuts and bolts.

Work out a deal to get the wire harness and ECM. Get the Evap box, Fuel pump, Fuel pump resistor, and front drive shaft.

If you did the work yourself you could break even for the swap by selling your motor, ecu and tranny.

I am having a Grand opening this weekend. Come down to my Shop and check my truck out. We are cooking a whole pig and doing some give aways.

Look up Clayton Guns on FB for directions.

Thumbs up

Nice job on the conversion. I've been wanting to do this to my wifes '00 since we got it back in '07. When I found your write-up, I was ready to start until I read the body-lift part. Wife is only 5'4" and has a hard time getting in my '06 2500 Dodge 4x4 that is stock. Now I'm trying to convince her it's time to replace the old 'runner (350k mi.) with something newer. Then I can build me a toy.

The 4runner is easy to get in and out of. My 70 year old aunt can climb in with no problem.

The dodge truck probably sits higher then a 6" lifted 4runner...

Update -

My neighbor got his 16,000 pound tractor stuck in a muddy field. It was buried to the frame. First - I used the Taco to pull it out but the it couldn't pull it out. I could hear the steel wire strands of the cable popping so I stopped. I then got the 4runner out and together, they pulled the big ass tractor out of the mud.

You MUST get this all the damn time... But If you had the time for a question or two, thanks!! My runner is a 96 4runner limited 4wd with e-locker, 4.30s and 281k on the original motor. So no multi-mode and different dash.

So a couple questions include what 2UZ-FE model and years would you recommend (donor vehicle is incredibly important, not just parts)?

sounded like the 96 Trans and t-case are the same models as the vehicles with the 2UZ-FE, but with some different connectors between mechanical and electrical?

Would a tundra be recommended over the sequoia because of the dash alone?

Would the conversion be this older 4runner because it's simpler? Or would it be more difficult because of the greater difference in years?

(Every project is different and your experience will vary)

Thanks for all your time with your help, and thanks for taking the risk and working though such a daunting project (though your history made you more than qualified)!

Eric
Thanks Eric,

Question 1 - Donor vehicle is not that important as any will do. Using the Tundra will be easier as they are more analog and have no transponder key.
Using a Sequoia will be cheaper as their salvage bring significantly less then the tundra.

As for years to get - Any will do but the later models have VVTI which adds more HP, so naturally later is better.

Question 2 - Transmissions are the same but bell housings and torque converters are different. Input shafts will be different also. Older transmission have mechanical pressure engagement while later ones are more electrical.

Question 3 - You can just swap the motor, you don't need to swap the dash. I swapped the dash because my odometer said 75k miles and i wanted it to match the drivetrain. Tundra dash is easier but no swap is the easiest.

The dash is not mandatory for the swap but it makes it that much nicer.

I would use the 4runner's transfer case so the only wiring is just the 2UZ-FE ECU. Easy peazy.

I posted this from the PM just in case others had similar questions.

Last January a rock came off a truck and put a chip in the windshield. Then the cold weather caused it to crack.

I just found out that my Insurance will fix for me so the came out to my shop and replace it.

He put the new glass in and he also updated my glass seal to change it from recessed to flush. My aerodynamic and no wind noise.

Yes - no more wind noise. You should use a little silicone and glue it down.

Why didn't he just get a tundra? Must of REALLY liked the body style of a Tacoma because I think Tundras look very nice.
3rd gen and 4th gen 4runners however... I'll take a 3rd gen over a 4th gen if the 3rd gen was on fire and rolled down a hill.
