I noticed today that the piece that houses the Home Link is a little loose. This piece also has a sunglass holder & the front map lights.

Does anyone know how it's held & how to tighten it up?

The front portion is held up by a couple of plastic shafts with metal clips. These fit into square recesses in the metal reinforcements on the underside of the roof. The rear portion is held up in two ways. One is by plastic tabs which extend past the edge of the assembly and rest on something (presumably metal) above the headliner. It is also held up by a rectangular piece of a velcro-like material which engages a similar material on the underside of the inside of the roof assembly. This stuff is probably to prevent looseness and vibration.

As far as how to tighten it up, it depends on whether the front portion or rear portion is more loose. The rear portion might be tightened up by simply pressing up firmly on it. The front portion may be loose if it has been previously removed (say for the sunroof rattle fix). It's typical for the metal clips covering the plastic shafts to get bent when the assembly is removed. If those clips aren't bent back correctly the whole thing could stay loose.

I did the homelink retrofit (just bought the part which includes the sunroof switch, lights, homelink, and sunglasses holder, and installed it) and I think there might have been pictures and instructions here on the forum somewhere. Not sure, though.

I have the same problem. My front part is loose and I know that it's a metal clip. I'm just waiting for the regular service time to ask them to fix it.

So I'm not sure how to get to it. Mine is loose in the front - by the windshield.

My runner is now on extened warrany, and I don't think it covers minor stuff like that.

If it won't stay up tight when you push it up (I'm sure you've tried) the only thing I can think of is to pull it down, re-bend the clips to their original form, and push it back in.

Pulling it down (by pulling down on the front edge, nearest the windshield) took a lot of force for me (presumably that was the bending of the clips) and I'm not sure exactly how to bend them back so they'd be secure.

Maybe others can offer more detailed suggestions. Did you ever have the sunroof rattle mod done?

The sunroof mod hasn't been done to my knowledge - nothing in previous owners records on it.

I hate to pull it down if you're not sure how to get it back up right!

Same as mine. Front right part. I know it's a clip. Extended warranty covering it for sure (I checked mine). So I'm waiting for regular service and will ask them to do it all together.

That's great. I thought plastic parts were excluded on the Platinum.

The front of it just pulls straight down... The back will 'pivot' down slightly, then once the front clips are released, it slides a little forward and you it will simply fall out. It's a piece of cake to take out and put back.

I have had mine off on a couple of occasions. Once to install the new upper console piece with the HomeLink (my 4Runner didn't come with it from the factory), and once to hardware my V1 into the wiring harness for the sunroof overhead. My clips got bent on both occasions and would no longer hold the piece firmly to the roof, nor would they clamp tightly on the plastic tabs they slide into on the console module itself.

A few minutes of carefully bending them so that they function properly is all it took. Mine stays up there quite firmly now.

The next time I plan to remove it, I'm going to probably just buy two new clips from the dealer before I pull it down. That way I don't have to mess with it. I can't imagine those clips costing more than a buck or two.

Those clips are metal ones.

RickyCRX, before buying them, pass the service department and ask for assistance, saying that this part came loose and you need just those metal clips, it's a piece of cake job and you're going to do it yourself instead of leaving the vehicle for an hour or more. They usually going to service box, grab a couple of those clips (man you can't imagine, how many different clips and small replacement parts they have in those boxes and quantity of them) and give you for FREE (nobody even count them).

That might work if the vehicle is newer, but my 4Runner has over 63k miles on it... Way outside a warranty period, so I don't know if they'd be as willing to do anything.
