Looking to buy. Is there a BAD year 3rd Gen?

Hi Folks,

I'm new on here and looking to move up to a 4-runner from a BMW 540iA (don't even ask...). I'd like to get a CPO 3rd-generation 4-runner (2003 or newer). Is there any such thing as a "bad" year to buy? There's the conventional rule of "never buy the first or last of anything...). Are there any "must have" options or upgrades that became available post-2003 that makes that year a better choice?

I'm looking for this to be a "gentleman's SUV", which is to say it will be mainly street-driven, do some light towing (small boat), and mild off-road driving. No hard-core offroad or racing. I'm not sure I could even justify 4WD, except that it probably enhances the resale value. Right now I'm eyeing the Limited Edition...

gotta have a v6. 4wd does not affect gas mileage but 1 or 2 mpg.(when disengaged)
sunroof is a must have. if you're looking for class, get a 01 or newer with auto climate control and heated seats.
 
The 2003-newer are the 4th Gens. And I doubt you'll find too many complaints about any of the years. I'd suggest the obvious and buy the newest, lowest milage one that has the options you want and meets your price range.
 
I just realized that 3rd-generation only goes to 2002, so I guess I'm looking at a 4th-generation. If this is an inappropriate board to post this question, or there's a better forum to do it, please let me know. On the other hand, if there are some compelling arguments for buying a G3 over a G4, I'd be interested in hearing those too.

I just did the same thing, for the same reason (2000 528i). I bought a 2001 Limited w/ 73K. Has all the options, sun roof, heated seats, etc. I looked at several 4 Runners to find this one. I was able to purchase as a CPO for 21K. I may have found one a little cheaper, but this one is like new, inside and out! Inspect the car carefully and you should be alright.

Through the magic of being a moderator, I moved you to the "general disscusion", which is for the 4th generation model.

So, if your looking for a 4th generation model, I would say the first year with the V6 had some hic-ups. Consumer Reports said it had a few problems and does not recommend it. Also the cladding in the first part of 2003 did not go over well. Of course if you like the cladding go for it. There was a re-call so the problem got fixed that Consumer Reports talks about.

As far as comparing the two generations, I would say there is a big difference. The 3rd generation, I have one, is much smaller, narrower and the ride is considered stiffer, i.e. rough. They have a smaller V6. It has an excellent reliability and they still have a high re-sale value.
 
How much does the small boat weigh and how much do you tow? You may want the 5 speed auto or even the V8.

All V8s have the 5 speed. 2005 and up V6s have the 5 speed.
 
For YOUR purpose, i would stick with the 4th gen 4runners. If you're towing, then i would get V8 which has full-time 4wd and 5-speed automatic tranny. The main reason though is the tranny cooler that comes standard on all V8 models.

Thus, if you stick with the V8 model 4runners, then get any year...it's THAT reliable.:) Obviously, you should always ask for service records/details on EVERY used car that you buy. I would also check CarFax, but keep in mind that CarFax is NOT perfect.
