A couple of questions for you CBI rear bumper owners

To CBI or fabricate?

So, I am trying to talk myself into a CBI rear bumper/tire carrier, but those gaudy side skirts just rub me the wrong way. I am thinking about fabricating my own a la Crozhawk style with a little bit more smooth, flowing look. My dad is a retired NASA engineer and can set it all up on AUTOCAD leaving me to get the metal cut, welded, finished and powder coated. Here are my questions for you folks that already have a CBI:

1) how much is the actual weight of the entire assembly?
2) what did you pay, ballpark, for freight?
3) how much did it drop the rear end of your vehicle?

Thanks in advance for the info!

I don't have one of these bumpers but I'd wager that if you contact CBI they'd be able to answer these questions more precisely since they make them.

I vote that you design something similar to crozhawk and then sell diy weld together kits :)

Heh yeah, you ca go on their web site for the weights. May be different for different gens.

1) 5th gen bumper: 135 for bumper without swing out. 165 or something with?
2) $200 to So Cal. your location will make a difference likely.
3) Not sure yet, but of course depends on suspension. I have a 2 in rear lift (2.5 actual) and with my 185 frame standing on the bumper I drop 0.5 inches.

(I'm still waiting for min to ship)

I met someone at Moab that fabbed his own front and rear bumpers. they looked awesome and he hadn't even welded before.

That said, the rear bumper alone took him 3 months of near constant work on it. So you better actually be LOOKING for a really labor intensive, long-term metal working project if you want to do it yourself.

When you really look at the time and work involved, the $1000+shipping might not seem all that bad after all :D

You CAN get CBI to custom aspects of the bumper. If you don't want the side hoops, no problem!

Well, I'm not sure the when the last time you checked CBI prices, but for the rear bumper, powder coated with tire swing away and jerry can carrier, it's about $2,200.00 BEFORE shipping. For LESS than that, I can fabricate my own, and actually make it a little bit lighter and A LOT better looking. As far as fabrication time, it would take about a week to AutoCAD the design, followed by 3 days of CNC cutting, about one week of welding, and two weeks of finishing and powder coating. That's a total of 4.5 weeks and even if it takes another three weeks, that still is a great lead time for a one off. As I stated in my original post, my dad is ready to do the AutoCAD design and I've got the welder ready to go. The CNC cutting, I am still working on getting it sorted, as I only have one friend with access to CNC oxy cutting equipment. We will have to see.

I just got the bumper, no swing out. About 1050 on sale plus 200 shipping I think. Then yeah your coating cost. But of course you'll have to do that on yours any way. As well as buy the steel etc. And even at your 5 to 8 week time frame that is a huge amount of work :)

It all comes down to cost versus time spent working on it. I've got all the fab equipment in my garage but I decided I just wanted it done. Installing it was about as much work as I wanted to dedicate to it. That alone is a hefty job. :)

Yeah, well I can understand that. But these are the sort of tasks that I enjoy, if I think I'm going to like the finished product more. As far as you spending $1,050.00 on the bumper before shipping, that's not bad. However, I want a spare tire carrier and Jerry can mount as well which puts me in the $2k arena for a bumper, that I just find bulky and unattractive. It's those hideous, side skirts, IMHO. Have you seen Crozhawk's original iteration? It is exactly how CBI SHOULD have done it. Just my 2 cents.

As far as the "huge amount of work": not really. The hardest part is the welding and finishing and my guy can knock it out in about a week or week-and-a-half.

Heh, you asked for someone to "talk me into a CBI bumper" but is sounds like I talked you OUT of it! :)

No, I did not ask anyone to "talk me into" buying the CBI bumper nor would I EVER ask anyone to "talk me into" anything. And no, you did not talk me out of it either, as I am not sure that I can pull the CNC oxy cutting together, thus making the CBI the obvious choice. We shall see.

"To CBI or fabricate? So, I am trying to talk myself into a CBI rear bumper/tire carrier..."

My mistake, I guess you were just talking to yourself there... Generally coming onto a public forum and making such statements is an invite to discuss the subject.

FWIW, I've got a CBI rear with a swingout. However, I bought mine used so I can only chime in on certain aspects.

1) I was definitely floored when I first saw the costs of them with a TC. I was expecting it to possibly be in the $1500 range, but phew! I was in a discussion about them during one of my trips and was informed that the hinge itself was the major cost factor. So you may want to look into that if you're going the R&D route.

2) I had mine picked up, so I cannot confirm about shipping costs. I do however know that I got my SW front cost ~150 (I think? Don't remember anymore) to ship to VA, and that was splitting the freight cost with 2 others. BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT'S INCLUDED IN YOUR DELIVERY COSTS!!! They wanted to charge us an additional $100 in "lift gate fees" to just take the damn things off the truck and put them on the curb. I guess it was foolish to think that curbside delivery included them dropping the damn thing off on the curb.

3) I don't really have any beef with the appearance of the bumper (I've also got an 06 bumper on an 03, which has a VERY MINOR fit difference in the fender flares), but my biggest problem is that they don't afford you any additional ground clearance. Tack on the additional weight, and you've actually got a loss of clearance. I installed the bumper very shortly after I got a set of DR's on, so I couldn't give you an accurate loss, but I figure it'd be almost an inch if you were still riding stock.

4) Could the thing be lighter? Sure. But I'll tell you what, I bounced my ass end hard coming down a rock this past weekend and there wasn't a single ding on the bumper. There was a scrape on the underside mounting bracket, but damnit if that didn't make every extra pound worth it IMO.

5) The damn thing shakes like a som***** when I get to about 65mph. It's from the vehicle shaking as a whole, but it still gets annoying because sometime you'll hear the squeak of the TC. I don't think there's much I can do about that though...

6) The kind I have has the screw on latch, and for some reason now that I've added the steel cable to keep it attached to the bumper, it's gotten unscrewed a 3/4 after a bumpy ride and will clang like no tomorrow until you go back there and tighten it. Doesn't do it on paved or even gravel roads, just when off roading. I'm debating on installing a lever latch, but this one is still functional, so I haven't figured out what I want to do with it yet.

Well, that sounds like alot of negatie at the end, but it's really been great from my experiences. I don't like the loss of mpg by turning my truck into a tank, but hey...you gotta make sacrifices I guess.

Hey, thanks Svana! That is some really helpful information and I appreciate it! Yes, I will definitely look into "the hinge" as this was something that I took for granted.
