4th Gen High Miles - Talk me out of it

Howdy guys,

I'm currently in a 3rd gen, but after driving a family member's with the V8 and AWD I can't stop thinking about it.

I came across one with real high mileage it has about 315K. Silver, Sport Edition with 4x.

Am I foolish to consider the notion of selling my 3rd gen with 194k 4WD with Rear locking differential to hopefully trade up to this 4th gen?

I know the V8s get great recognition, but 300k is pushing the limits of mechanical wear especially because I don't know the previous history of the vehicle.

I have also heard great things about the 750f transmission, but again, at 300k+, something has got to give right?


So, I'll leave it to you guys, am I stuck in a grass is greener scenario where I'll be in trouble with this high mileage beaut?

I was advised not to buy the v8. My buddy is a Toyota master mechanic so I pretty much take to heart his recommendations about that stuff...

But other than that, what's the price? At 300k+ miles, I wouldn't pay more than 5k especially since you have little knowledge of the service history.

I'd also suggest selling your locker septate from your 4 runner.. or see if you can keep it and put it in the 4th gen.

I've seen a v6 with 56 factory service records on it and 212k miles go for $7800..

Why were you advised against it? It's one of if not the best most reliable and overbuilt engine Toyota ever made.

I would question you're buddy because he is very wrong.
 
I'll start by saying that these 4th gen 4Runners (V6 or V8) are some of the most reliable cars out there. But trading "up" for a 315K mile car is just not something I personally would do.

That's a lot of wear and tear that I wouldn't want to have in the back of my mind.

Apart from getting about 12mpg, it's got more maintenance required.

In Toyota history, timing chains have been held in higher regard than timing belts. The v6 has a chain that will last as long as you keep the oil changed. The v8 has a belt that needs to be replaced every 80-100k.

Also, the starter is located beneath the manifold.

I avoided it because, while I've rebuild engines and have no fear of replacing a timing belt or starter, I've had some annoying experiences with timing belts. Plus, there's the whole "while you're in there" mentality which can triple the parts cost..

I suppose it's all about what you want in a vehicle. If a 300k+ mile 4.7L v8 is what you want, go for it. But you said you don't have any service history on it.. which means timing belt, and all the "while you're in there" goodies..

Now, if you had excellent service history on it and saw that the timing belt has been replaced a few times.. that's a different story.

I love my V8 but then again it only has 135k on it and the belt had just been done prior to me buying it. Coming from Land Rovers I'm not opposed to doing the belt in the future. If I didn't care to do it myself I would have gone with a V6. But I just love the V8...

300k is out of my comfort zone, I'd pass.. unless its real cheap and has EXCELLENT service history.
 
I would pass, there's too much risk in giving up a car that you're familiar with to gamble on something with more than 100k additional miles on it. Keep an eye out for a V8 4th gen if you want, but I would look/wait for one with less miles than your current rig.

If it's priced right, straight, and clean inside and out why not? You could replace the entire power train from much less then the price of a comparable new vehicle. And have a superior vehicle too anything being offered today.
 
Thank you for the opinions guys. I should have mentioned that it will not be my only means of transportation, so in the event of a breakdown, or costly repairs, I am not in too sticky of a situation.

I think the listing was for 6,990, that being said it has been listed for over a month and is still there. I'm sure, like me, people see the mileage and run. Or I guess in my case, consider something the majority of the population would find abosutely outlandish. Who knows, maybe he wants to get rid of it enough and I offer him 4500 or so.

The thing that gets me, and what you guys have mentioned is that with that mileage I am looking at a myriad of possible repairs. Wheel bearings, differential bearings, solenoids, not to mention the drivetrain itself.

This sure would be easier with service records.


So do I still consider selling my third gen, low balling this guy and potentially pocketing some cash? As you can probably tell, I am such a sucker for V8s and the UZ family series of engine in particular I have had great experiences with in the past. ~236K on a 1UZ, and had almost 270K on another before a T-bone totaled it.


Thanks again and please feel free to put me in my place. I am currently not working and tend to get some pretty iffy ideas when I start getting stir crazy.

I find it funny that "drivetrain" comes up as misspelled on a car enthusiast forum.

Wait for a better deal but i know that can take awhile. I just picked up an 03 v8 4x4 for $5600 on facebook marketplace. Got it at a low price as there is some rust on it and most people are not on thst site yet. Still at 154k a great price.
 
Trading for a vehicle with 100k more miles is just stupid.

You asked for opinions, you got one.

Supercharge or Turbocharge the 3rd gen for your speed rush.

Appreciate the responses guys. Looks like it'll be 3rd generation mania until something better rolls along. Whether it is a cushy 4th generation or a nice little forced induction setup for my current engine.

What ever you do don't worry about the V8. Great trucks I would not be scared of it at all. However the price is not reflective of the mileage. If it is something you were comfortable with driving I would beat them up on the price quite a bit before I would think about buying.
 
No matter how great the engine is high miles means somebodys ass has been it that seat a long time. Lots of time for everything to happen inside and out. My 03 just had the tip of the key break off. Because our key are cut on both sides it snapped off about a 1/4 inch from he end. By it cheap for a play toy not a driver.
 
I wouldn't do it... Around here (ATL) I've found V8 4x4s under 8k with 170-190k miles on them. It's more than that cost but keep looking, definitely wouldn't want to deal with that kind of mileage, especially when you might have to sell it.
 
Reviving this thread.

I'm looking at a 2005 v6 4th gen with 249,000 miles.

Test drove it and it ran great. Shifts good. Definitely cosmetic damage here and there, a rust spot on top of the back door, but everything seemed sound when inspected.

I'm going to bite the bullet and get a pre-purchase inspection at a reputable shop, but if anybody wants to talk me out of it or shed some light, would be very much appreciated.

Also, definitely planning to negotiate. No 4runner with that many miles is worth that amount.
