Get more power out of USB outlet?

I installed this USB outlet because I wanted an "audio" only USB connection to use to connect to my HU for CarPlay.

It works great, except when I use GPS there's not enough juice to charge my phone, I get a drain.

Is there any way to either get more power to this connection or if I buy another is there something I should look for to confirm it will be robust enough to pass enough power through the cable?

Pretty sure you're only getting <1 amp through that USB plug hence the drain when you use your phone for more high stress usage.

Look for something 2.4 amps or higher if you have a phone that can utilizes the quick charge tech.

Same lingo if you go the cigarette charger plug route. Gotta read the small print on those. Throw away anything not outputting 2.4 amps.

Also note, they may be rated for so many amps, but actual power may be less. And chords do play a factor in how much power gets transferred.
 
Yeah, I've got one like that that's just power and it keeps up, but I'm looking for a solution that's a USB pass through connection to my radio like the one I posted.

Never seen that plug in..looks awesome. Will it work on the stock non-jbl headunit?
 
i had a similar issue where my phone takes Qualcomm's QuickCharge 2.0 and on normal chargers, even 2.4ampers, would barley keep up with Navigation running and the screen on.

my solution was to install these USB plugs that come with the USB-A end, so the unit itself is just a USB extender from a real charger. I wired in some Aukey QuickCharge 2.0 car chargers to these units and its been smooth sailing since.

I just ran a USB cord from the back of my H/U under my shifter console to my center console. Dremelled a small hole to run the USB cord into the center console. Then plug my lightening wire into the USB port and hang the wire out of the armrest lid.
Not the answer to your question but a solution to your problem maybe.
 
I ended up just hot gluing the female end of the USB extension cable from the HU to the plug cap. The "slowdown" in charge was coming from the plug's USB connection. Now I can run the GPS and the phone will charge.

I put a dust cover over the now empty other slot.

I still have my original USB outlet that provides a strong charge for passengers or other devices.
