Post 5th Gen 4Runner Brakes Upgrade (for 4th Gen 4Runner)

I have looked across the internet and found a lot of information spread throughout but nothing that was easy to follow.
THIS THREAD was the most helpful. (51 pages of information)
I am only trying to compile all necessary information to make the upgrade easier for everyone.

UPDATE:
Some people are still having issues with the calipers still seizing. This seems highly situational and I haven't taken the time to look for a pattern of causation.

I personally have had 0 issues and absolutely love the added stopping power. (Installed everything in March 2018 and it's currently Jan 2023)

This is a very easy upgrade caliper swap.
The mounts are identical and line up perfectly.
4th Gen Sport models (Sport Brakes Package optional on the Limited) have larger front calipers (13WH) and rotors than the SR5 models (13WG) so no modifications are necessary. The rear calipers/rotors are the same for all 4th Gens.
Yes, this upgrade DOES work on SR5 but the dust shield/covers need to be modified/cut or upgraded. (Just like the 3rd gen 4Runner -> Tundra caliper upgrade)
SR5 owners have the option of "upgrading" their brakes to the Sport brakes but these still have the seizing issues.

The 5th Gen calipers have shown less issues with seizing than the 4th gen calipers have. (my front left caliper seized which prompted this thread)
The 5th Gen front and rear caliper pistons are (2.5mm-3mm) larger than the 4th gens (not sure if this is compared to 13WH, 13WG or both)
The 5th Gen front rotors are 4mm thicker than the 4th Gen rotors. (this extra thickness helps with heat dissipation and warping)
The 5th Gen front rotors are the same diameter as the 4th Gen Sport (338mm or 13.307") (SR5 has 319.024mm or 12.56")

5th Gen Front Rotors:
Nominal Thickness: 31.8mm (1.25")
Minimum Thickness: 29mm (1.14")

4th Gen Front Rotors:
Nominal Rotor Thickness: 27.94mm (1.1")
Minimum Rotor Thickness: 25.908mm (1.02")

It is possible to use the larger (Sport) 4th Gen rotors with 5th Gen calipers...
The pistons in the calipers will over extend when the pads get warn down if you use the 4th Gen front rotors with the 5th Gen calipers. It is highly recommended to upgrade the rotors too
It is even less recommended to use the SR5 rotors with the 5th Gen calipers because of the smaller rotor diameter in addition to them being thinner.

5th Gen Rear Rotors:
Nominal Thickness: 18.034mm (0.71")
Minimum Thickness: 16.002mm (0.63")
Outside Diameter: 312.166mm (12.29")

4th Gen Rear Rotors:
Nominal Rotor Thickness: 18.034mm (0.71")
Minimum Rotor Thickness: 16.002mm (0.63")
Outside Diameter: 311.912mm (12.28")

Both 4th and 5th Gen rear rotors seem to work. Proofs:
5th: BlackWorksInc and measurements, Runn4est, JeffMerr, verman84
4th: 084RUNNAH,
The argument of why it might better to use 4th gen rotors: pjbrownva
ACDELCO 18A2735 (5th Gens) Center Hole Diameter 107.95 MM
ACDELCO 18A1227 (4th Gens) Center Hole Diameter 106.17 MM
That is the section of the rotor the emergency/parking brake uses like a drum brake (brake shoes press against the inside of the rotor)

Here are the other vehicles with the calipers we're after.
Front Calipers: 14WA
  • LEXUS GX460 2010-2015
  • TOYOTA 4RUNNER 2010-2015 (THEY CHANGED THE FRONT CALIPERS OF THE 5TH GENS STARTING IN 2016 which will not work)

Rear Calipers: F14 and braket 14B?
  • LEXUS GX460 2010-2017
  • LEXUS GX470 2003-2009
  • TOYOTA 4RUNNER 2010-2017
  • TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2001-2007
If you are debating whether or not to change the rears in addition to the fronts: Slowgoat here verman84 here M1911 here

When buying calipers, you'll usually have these options (source):
  • Unloaded - Caliper
  • Semi-Loaded - Caliper, caliper mounting bracket, hardware, no pads. (<-- Recommended)
  • Loaded - Caliper, caliper mounting bracket, hardware (shims, sometimes bolts, rubber thingies, metal retainer thing), pads
Most calipers do not come 'finished' and will rust quickly. I highly recommend painting them, properly, if you do not buy them already painted.
JeffMerr and pjbrownva (with pictures)

Brake Pads:
4th Gen (Sport and Limited models) Have the same pads as the 5th Gen 4Runners (source1)(source2)

Wheels:
17" wheel recommended. Some aftermarket 16" work (like the FJ Cruiser TRD Pro 16s) but stock 4Runner 16" wheels will not. (source)

Brake Bleeding: (See Post #2 in this thread)
Brake Bleeding section of 4Runner repair manual. Link to PDF

I can't find any Speed Bleeders that claim to work on the 5th gen calipers. They may be different based on the (re)manufacturer.
Centric Front (141.44287 and 141.44288) Bleeder is 7mm x 1mm
Centric Rear (141.44587 and 141.44588) Bleeder is 10mm x 1mm
Duralast Front D6278 and Rear 19-B2737 calipers: 10mm x 1mm
Cardone(Wearever) Rear caliper Bleeder is 10mm x 1mm

Speed Bleeder(brand) (their website):
pjbrownva here ordered Front: SB7100-SS Rear: SB1010-SS Order Total: $70.00
DoctorMegaly uploaded a video on YouTube. He also used SB7100-SS for his front calipers (7mm x 1mm)

3/16" hose recommended for most nipples

My personal installation guide... (didn't have time to document, bought PWR-KC138-36 and stainless braided Front and Rear lines)
Let me know if I left out any helpful information and I'll add it to the original post.

How to fix spongy brakes:

I've been through this (with multiple caliper changes) and here is what I found works for me to eliminate the spongy pedal.
Ignore the content in the document about the tester.
It's an electric MC pump so start by bleeding with the ignition ON, engine off. The order is somewhere in the document.
Even with a good bleeding you need to finish with step 2a & b (or 5a). If you have previously done a good bleed then skip right to this step. Do the following with the ignition OFF. They say depress the pedal 40 times but here is where they are short on detail. Forty quick on/off cycles is a waste of time. Do 15 or 20 second cycles. Think of how slow air bubbles travel in brake fluid. Depress and hold the brake for 20 seconds, then let go and wait 20 seconds. Imitate the normal braking stroke as if driving. Repeat 40 times. The pedal may bottom out but hold it there. You will feel the pedal go solid at around 20 cycles but don't stop the cycles there. Do 40 cycles. Give yourself 30 minutes to do this.
Repeat as needed over several days and your brake feel will return.

Hope this helps.

This is a great consolidation!

I'm glad you made mention of Blackworks post on the rotor bore size. I've seen a lot of skepticism lately on the rear 5th gen rotors being used. People have claimed to me (even after I successfully installed the brakes) the e-brake wont work properly...I can confirm that I am successfully using 5th gen rears with no issue and the e-brake works as intended.

One correction though. The larger brakes on the Limited were an option. I had to bend back the dust shield on mine (03 V8 Limited)

Also, i believe you need 17" rims to clear the caliper, so with the SR5 it can be an issue.

Awesome job.

Everything you wrote is a great summary of the process. My suggestion is to go with the 4th gen rear rotors. I went with the 5th gen and the access holes to the parking brake tensioner star nut don't line up entirely correctly. Go with 4th gen rear rotors.

Also, I would make this super bold and large. Paint your calipers or buy them already painted. These things rust ridiculously fast. Mine turned orange in a few months tops and I don't even live in the rust belt. Really wish I had painted them.

The previous owner of my 4th gen did a 5th gen brake swap, and I don't think it was more than 5-10k miles prior to me buying it from him. I'm getting a pretty loud squeal from the front these days. Any ideas on what I can check? For the record, I did my own Tundra Brake Upgrade on my 3rd gen, so I should be able to crack this, I just don't know where to start.

Thanks!

Check to be sure they put the "shims" on the back side of the pads.

Cost of upgrade

I have had a shimmy in the brakes of my 4th gen recently (wobbling steering wheel, pulsing in the braking action) and know I need to replace some components. Unsure though if it's warped rotors or seizing calipers (or even both). Have considered just doing the 5th gen swap while I'm making the investment. How much does the 5th gen swap cost if quality (but not necessarily top of the line) components are used?

I was in a similar situation and did this upgrade in May. I paid $600 for parts (not including the optional steel brake line upgrade) and about $200 for labor. (When ordering from Advance, you should be able to find some 20-25% discount coupons.)

Centric rear rotors 120.44128 $77 CarID
Centric front rotors 120.44174 $103 CarID
OEM rear pads $50
OEM front pads $52
Advance Auto limited lifetime semi-loaded calipers rear 19-B2736/19-B2737 2 x $74 + refundable core charge
Advance Auto limited lifetime semi-loaded calipers front 19-6278/19-6279 2 x $83 + refundable core charge

Goodridge brake line (optional) $168 TireRack

(Advance lists those calipers as unloaded + all hardware (except pads), which I understand makes them semi-loaded.)

I've got 5th gen calipers and front rotors on the way from R1 Concepts, along with 4th gen rear rotors. Gonna do them when I do the lift, hopefully before Thanksgiving. Pretty sure I got the right stuff due to this thread, so thanks!

I think it's safe to say conclusively that 16" wheels will not fit.

I test fit a 14WA caliper with my 16" Level 8 MK6 winter wheels. The inner diameter of the wheels hit on the top center of the caliper and prevented the wheel from fully seating on the hub(+rotor).

Guess I'm buying WG calipers with the extended warranty :/
