Need New A/T Tires - Survey Results from Tire Rack

After around 40k miles, it looks like my Bridgestone Revos will need to be changed at about 50k. While I really like the Revos, the price on them at Discount Tire has soared to around $200 each! They are cheaper at Tire Rack, but you have to pay shipping, etc. Plus while the Revo tread wear is OK, it's not great.

So I'm going to choose something else this time around.

Tire Rack lists these stock size A/T tires (265/65/17) in order according to user survey preference:

1. Pirelli Scorpion ATR $144
2. Firestone Destination A/T $130
3. Bridgestone Revos $170

Going the next size up (265/70/17), Tire Rack lists these in order of user survey preference:

1. Pirelli Scorpion ATR $144
2. Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor $166
3. Firestone Destination A/T $117
4. Bridgestone Revo $170
5. General Grabber AT 2 $99-110
6. Kumho Road Venture AT KL-78 $105
(BTW: the BFG AT KO was #9 middle of the pack $161)

I'm also considering the 265/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapler, which is not listed with Tire Rack, but people on Tire.com (Discount Tire), and people on here seem to really like it. Discount Tire has these for about $130.

So I guess I want the best off-road ability, dry road handling & quietness, good wet road handling, and tire wear for the price. Oh, did I say looks? Yes I want it all!

The Nitto definitely has some aggressive looks to it! Anybody have any experience with the Firestone Destination or the General Grabber AT 2?

Also, I assume there is no big issue with going to the slightly taller (1") 265/70/17. (although I wouldn't want less torque for towing)

Let the voting/recommendations begin!

Find real reviews since most of those surveys are people justifying their purchase more than actual knowledge of tires and their performance.

My mom could give a good review to her tires but I know my mom and she doesn't know the first thing about tires. She's running Yok Geolandar HT-S and IMO they a very solid tire for street use and the occasional mild trail.

Those Pirelli Scorpions aren't that good a tire.

I love my Nittos and they perform great in the wet and snow and after two years of off roading I've yet to have an issue. I've got over 20k on 'em and they are wearing nice considering my hard style of driving.

Any reason the Toyo open country A/T is not on the list? I am running those now and will definitely get another set when these wear out.

From your list, i would go with Goodyear Wrangler SA. Because you tow a lot, i would make sure that you get a LT-rated tire. Seriously, i would also consider BFG AT KO with your towing and off-roading. Although BFG is not cheap, you do get what you pay for...and in your case, a tire failure is the last thing that you want when towing. What you pay more now may save your more money and headache down the road.

For some reason the Geolander isn't available in the right sizes around here - according to Tire.com.

Not seeing the Toyo on either Tire Rack or Discount Tire.

Thai - While normally LT tires are highly recommended for towing due to their stiffer sidewalls (less sway), it becomes a non-issue using the Hensley hitching system, which eliminates sway totally.

Anybody notice a slight loss of power in going to the larger, 265/70/17 size?

Stick with stock size?

I guess the 1st thing I need to do is narrow the search down by size. I have heard that getting the bigger-than-stock 265/70/17 will reduce the torque output. I definitely don't want this while towing a trailer as big as mine! Can anybody speak to this?

If this is the case, then there are only a very few A/T choices to go with in the stock 265/65/17 size it seems:

> Revo (very expensive)
> Firestone Destination A/T
> Pirelli Scorpion ATR (don't care for the looks)
> Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S. I've now found them on Tire.com!

The Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S is not rated on Tire Rack (another Geolander is), but is very highly rated at Discount Tire's (Tire.com) website by users.

Again, LT tires are not needed at all with the premium hitching system I use (trust me on this) - plus they don't make them in the stock size!

My mom has the Yok AT-S on her '99 Runner and they do ride better than my Nittos and do quite well in the rain.

Thanks for asking. Class 3-4 stuff is probably the worst. We get onto dirt mountain roads, and desert roads too. Most times we don't have to get out & spot ourselves, so that's why I say no higher than a class 4. We did a class five with a bunch of Tacos, and they had to spot us over & around a lot of things that scraped the belly (and also one vinyl fender flare). I try not to do class 5 stuff any more with my stock vehicle.

But, while were trying to get to a rather remote trail head to hike, we often come across some "interesting" roads. Plus if it rains, it gets more interesting.

Truth is this only happens a half dozen or so times a year, and in this respect the Revos have got us through just fine - but we do need some some decent A/T capability in those instances.

Well they are a little cheaper than the Revos! Also the BFG KO is getting right up there pricewise.

Still haven't heard anyone address the possible torque reduction issue with going to the larger size.

Well, you know the answer already...larger tires reduce power...this is pretty obvious in both my old 4runner (2002) and my current G500. Both went from 31" stock tires to 32" tires. You can't get around this power loss. Will it bother you?? Only you can answer that. And going from 31" to 32" ain't gonna need any re-gearing (not even available anyway).

I have the Firestones in 265/70/17. I swapped out the Dunlops as soon as I bought the truck. Its only been 3 weeks, so not a lot of miles on them yet (2000) but so far theyve been great. I tow (4000 boat+trailer) and it hasnt been a problem in the hills of northwest CT.

I almost went with the Revos based on their reputation on here and Tirerack. I just couldnt justify the $60 difference (per tire) though. I would have gone with the GYSA's, as theyre supposed to be a great tire. Their biggest weakness is that theyre heavy- which accounts for a 2-3 MPG drop from what I can tell. Thats too much for me, and Im guessing others agree- notice theyre rated lower than the other tires in the "Would you buy again" category. The BFG's look great and last forever, but from what Ive read their on-road ride suffers a little, and their performance in the wet gets worse with age (plus theyre expensive). My dad is on his second set of Geolanders on his Pathfinder, and theyre not a bad tire for the money either. They dont look quite as aggressive though.

If you read the actual reviews on TireRack, there are several people who compared the Firestones favorably to the Revos, having owned both. For the price difference, I was willing to take a chance with them. I can tell you that when new, they handle wet roads well and look terrific!

I may just have to look into the Firestone destinations then, to stay with the stock size. They appear to be significantly cheaper on Tire Rack.com than at the Firestone store, even with paying frieght. Perhaps Firestone will have a sale when I need them (probably in the fall).

But now these are popping up on Tire Rack as having the 265/65/17 stock size! WTF!

Geolander A/T-S $119 (Tire Rack)

Anybody have any experience with these - Fusion XTi $102 (Tire Rack)

Personal bias...i feel that bigger companies are more reliable and stand more by their product.

All "Fusion" or is it "Fuzion" tires are made by Bridgstone/Firestone corp.
