Gas pump keeps shutting off
I’ve been noticing more every week when I fill up my tank the gas pump shuts off a lot and it’s incredibly annoying. I was wondering if it’s an evap leak or something with the canister

I have a 2008 and it gets worse every year.
The only thing that works for me is turning the nozzle upside down.
I heard replacing the Fuel Tank Filler Neck can help but have not tested it yet.

I had this issue with an S10 Blazer years ago, turns out there are charcoal filters in these evap canisters of modern vehicles for evaporation emissions. So the most common problem is when people top off their tanks all the way to the filler neck, the charcoal evap canister gets saturated and then there becomes a fault with the system allowing displaced air to escape when filling your tank. This will cause the pressure of incoming fuel to back up, which in turn shuts the pump off.
I never replaced the one on the Blazer, and I have never had the problem with my T4Rs since I quit filling up to the neck. You can hope that it dries out and resolves the problem or you may have to service yours.
So as an FYI: DO NOT FILL YOUR TANK ALL THE WAY TO THE BRIM. Let the pump shut off when full and leave it there.

It happens on some gas pumps, not all... If I angle the nozzle at about a 45 degrees it works pretty good.

Definitely agree with this! Good info everyone should know.
When the pump shuts off it's full. Occasionally it's a faulty fuel fill pump, but most of the time related to the Evap Canister from being contaminated by overfilling with fuel, or a faulty purge valve.

Not to step on toes but usually it's the vent valve not the purge valve. Purge solonoid opens into the intake when commanded by the ECU to burn off excess gasses.

My apologies, thanks for the correction. That's what I get for multi-tasking while at work.

All good. I dont see a vent valve listed separately on the 4runner. Probably built into the canister itself. I havent had to do mine yet, but I've done dozens on our GM fleet vehicles. Im sure some someone with more 4runner experience than me will know for sure.

You may also want to try pulling the pump out an inch or so, rather than havng it pushed in all the way. Has worked for me on numerous vehicles.

You can check the things as others have suggested, but my guess would be that there is an issue with the evap canister. Whether it be from an over fill/fuel saturation problem or plugged with dirt. You should also check that the lines and hoses aren't kinked anywhere. One other thing you can check is the little flapper valve down at the fuel tank inlet (best done with a borescope if you have one). Its possible that it is somehow stuck and not moving freely, thus causing the fuel pump nozzle to kick off when attempting to fill. Heard about this being an issue on like 17-18 MY Tundras. Well good luck and hope you get it figured out...

I have this problem, occasionally, and I almost always go to the same Shell gas station by my house.
I have read/heard that I should stop filling when the pump shuts off automatically. That seems like a good idea, but I am able to put 2, sometimes 3, more gallons in the tank after the automatic shut off. I always fill to the top of the filler neck, and the pump doesn’t shut off that often.
After reading this thread, I may stop topping off my tank!

I think it’s an emissions thing for certain states. In CA happened to me at all the time, in Oregon has never happened.
Ether way, I had great success when I only had the trigger halfway pulled. It’s a slower fill, but never had it shut off for me when I started doing that.
