Borla Exhaust Install

I just got my Borla Exhaust today from www.performancecenter.com. It was $844 plus tax shipped free via fedex. I ordered it over the phone cause I am going out of town tonight and wanted to make sure it got here before I left. It was a pretty painless procedure to get it in and aligned correctly. First off it sounds and looks awesome. It is nice and quiet at idle but when you get on the gas it sounds really nice. It is nice and tight sounding, not so hollow like a flowmaster 40 for example. I had a Dodge Dak with the 5.2 V8 with a 40 on it and it was pretty mean. It's hard to expain the difference, but this sounds much different.

First, spray some good oil on the two flanges on the factory exhaust. I use PB Blaster and it works great. Then unbolt the bolts with the springs on them attached to the front of the factory system and set them aside.

Second unbolt the rear flange above the rear axle so the whole front section is free and only secured by the rubber hangars.

Then start removing the 2 sections from the hangars, I had my brother help me it makes it a lot easier with 2 people to hold the can and get it off the hangars. Leave the rubber hangars attached to the vehicle and slide the front section of the new exhaust into those it should fit nice and snug.

Then using the brackets provided by borla put on the rubber hangars they provide as well. Do this first before you bolt the hangars onto the frame behind the rear wheels. I had to drill a little bit out of the hole because it there was still a bit of rubber in there left over from manufacturing. It is kinda hard to get the hangars they give you on the brackets but a little soapy water, a vice, and a rubber mallet worked really well.

Next slide the right pipe up and over the frame and onto the right side of the new can putting a clamp on first and bolt up the pipe to the hole on the frame. It was threaded on mine and there was no way to put the nut on so a little lock tigh and a good socket were necessary.

After that put on the short pipe right next to the right side pipe so it comes down by the spare and put a clamp on the joint. attach the long pipe to that and bolt up the left tip the same way as the right side, then tighten up the clamps making sure that all the tubes are seated all the way in and voila. A kick ass exhaust, better throttle response, and a lighter wallet cause you want to drive it hard.

It says to take off the spare in the instructions but I didn't and it wasn't a problem. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes but now that I have done one it should take about half an hour to 45 minutes at most. As far as tools go you'll need a 14mm, 16mm socket and a deep 14mm socket, as well as a torque wrench and a measuring tape the get the spacing right.

check the spacing of the tips compared to the fender, and width of how far they stick out so that they are even. You will have a little room to adjust them where they connect to the pipes with the clamps. Good luck, it's not that hard.

bummer about the fedex. Sometimes if you don't live too far from their area distribution center you can go pick it up at 5pm when they get back. give them a call.

Got her in!.....well mostly. :-\

I open the box and get into taking off the stock shite which required the sawzall and start putting the borla stuff on. The muffler goes in nicely, very easy overall, then my new prob arises :-) Turns out that sparks toyota only sent me one of the rear hangar assemblies, the left one actually... So the exhuast is on, but post muffler there is nothing there yet...
Im not sure exactly what to do, but i guess im going to go to my dealership and see if they have one in stock and buy itand ask for reimbursement from sparks.

I have a couple other ?s
Your rear hangars, the parts that bolt up the frame, exactly how hard was it to get the rubber on there? It seems IMPOSSIBLE with mine... in your pic #4, it appears that the little 'male' parts that insert into the rubber are of equal length and a reasonable angle. One of mine is shorter and they are angled inward a bit to were i think its not possible to get the rubber on there... :-( i mean, not even a rubber mallet would work. lemme know if you get it or if i need to take a pic.

Also, the screws that go into the frame..... my hole too is threaded and it seems TOO tight for the bolt.....was this the case with you?again seems like a no go. lemme know what you think!

So i just took my first drive and I am impressed! Granted the system is no doubt a little louder due to the fact that there are no pipes on past the muffler, but it sounds TOUGH! Very nice :-) Now if i can get the parts i need ill be 100% good to go! god has made this difficult for me, for some reason....

Sweet writeup. Is there anything like this (pictures included) on installing a spacer lift?

Putting on the rubber hangars was a pain in the ass. I used some soapy water I have in an old windex bottle. I also used my vice to help get that thing on there.

That sucks about only receiving one frame hangar. You might not be using the correct frame hole. I can't remember exactly but I think that happened to mine too. look around and see if there are any other holes for it to mount up to. Post a pic of where you are trying to mount it, and also a pic of the rubber hangar problem and I will see how it compares to mine.

Kaylay, I used to live in boulder, I went to school there. My brother goes there now. I have a write up for a lift install but it is for a sway a way lift not a spacer lift. Do a search for that, it should be relatively the same process. Go Buffs!

borla

Hi all on this thread. I have my Borla for about ! 1/2 years now on my 4runner truck and I need some help from anyone in the local area( NYC). I now notice going over a bump I hear a clank sound from the exhaust system. Checked the brackets and hangers and all is ok. I also knew when I had it installed the borla, the exhaust tips were not even or balance ( one side higher than the other). For I have no knowledge on exhaust configuration and neithers those the local exhaust shop who wanted again to heat the pipes then bend them into place. Can anyone from the local area of NYC reffer me to a knowledgable performance exhaust shop in which I can get this thing straighten out. I don't have the tools, time nor the knowledge to this.

Thank you in advance to all.:awais:

sorry man, I am out here in So. Cal. Sounds like a shoddy installation. I don't really know any shops back there except unique which is on TV. They do nice work and could probably get it done.

update 1002.66
I called sparks and told them that they forgot to send me BOTH hangars, so that hopefully this time they send me two CORRECT hangars..... I honestly believe that one from before was not for our installation... ill get pics.
So in the next day or so ill get those hangars, unless fedex takes an extra week like they did with the exhaust :-) actually i think it sounds fvcking awesome the way it is, its the 4runner of DEATH.

what a pain in the ass. I hate when crap like that happens. Post some pics of the new ones. I looked on my frame and the hangar bolts on to the first hole after the rear x member after the suspension. on the bottom of the frame rail. I'll take a pic if you need one. Good luck, it shouldn't be too tough with the right parts.

for sure!
Well m hoping that the two new hangar brackets they send are different than the one i have now, which seems fulked! I need to get a pic... charging cam now....

She sounds sick as is, im curious as to how adding the rest of the pipes will make her sound :-)

Whats funny is in my nearly 3 years of owning a 4r I think ive maybe only seen ONE in all my travels, locally, with the trd/borla exhaust. well, ive only ever seen one EVER... unless im imagining it. I LOVE THE EXHUAST, no matter how much BS ive had to deal with, at this point IM HAPPY :-D

couple pics

#1- Hangar Bracket. Lemme know if yours was like this......\

#2- Bracket and Rubber. I would need to bend one fo the arms (the shorter) out a bit to make it work...

#3- a wire loom that got semi melted via my short exhaust but whatever, ill have it replaced at my next service (next day or so). Im just curious as to what it is. It connects to the side of the gas tank facing the exhaust (pic to follow). I havent gotten any indicator lights or anything weird.... im gonna try and zip tie it as far away as i can because i have to some shit to do.... have to drive. DO you think that wrappng a few layers of foil around the affected area would be helpful as a temp thing? The white piece in the pic i think sticks to the underside of the truck, there is another down the line closer to the gas tank....
