If you have the 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE engine and are faced with a starter failure or you're planning on replacing it as preventative maintenance to avoid getting stuck out in BFE, this video will show you how to replace it. The starter replacement isn't that bad for owners that don't have the secondary air injection system. The 2UZ-FE 4.7L V8 Engine got an update in 2005 with VVT (Variable Valve Timing). With VVT, the engine unfortunately also got the secondary air injection system. The secondary air injection system makes the starter replacement much harder to pull off. This video will work for anyone with the 2UZ-FE engine wanting to replace their starter, but it will really benefit those with 2005 and newer rigs.

Enjoyed your video, certainly glad I have an '03 without the exhaust recirculation, what a major pain to deal with! I went out and looked at my setup several times while watching your video and mine is so clean compared to the '05 and later. Only hitch I see is the aluminum intake on mine, I think I would take it off in two pieces if I have to do my starter as the manifold looks heavy and cumbersome. Thanks again, I like your videos.

Yeah, that plastic intake manifold is nice and light so I guess that's one benefit of the newer 2UZ engines.

The secondary air injection adds problems on many levels. It's not just the fact the switching valves at the back of the engine make it much harder to remove that water bypass joint. With the air pump and primary switching valve, you have more electrical connectors that can break, and two of them did. You also have the air hoses that will be rock hard and you absolutely should replace them.

The FSM pages I downloaded from the Toyota Tech Info website sort of set me up for failure. In the parts schematic and in the instructions, there was no mention of those switching valves at the back of the engine. When I was watching existing YouTube videos on the subject, I just happened to only find videos where the people didn't have to deal with the secondary air injection system.

So, a job I thought would only take one day, turned into a 3 day job. To add insult to injury, at the end of the job when we started the engine, we noticed a significant coolant leak. The culprit was the bypass pipe in the valley between the heads. I decided to lubricate the o-ring with silicone paste and that was a mistake. After I screamed and cursed for a while, we drained the coolant, pulled off the intake manifold, removed the bypass pipe, cleaned the silicone off the o-ring and inside the coolant pipe it fits into, and reinserted it with just some coolant to lubricate the o-ring. After that, no coolant leak and we were finally done with the nightmare this job was.

I did a swap to the plastic plenum on my 03' last year and changed my starter while I was in there. Even the easier model was a bear for me, can't imagine how frustrating the later models are.

You probably have already heard of these bypass kits, illegal in a lot of states of course, but a viable option for the dreaded SAIS issues and the insane amount of expense involved fixing them back to factory spec. I don't know if anyone has successfully gone through smog in CA, but I bet it's been tried.

Yeah, I've heard of the Hewitt Bypass kits. It's probably not something I want to advertise on my YouTube channel, because who knows, the big brother government might target me. I'm sure lots of guys have gotten away with using this kit to get their rig smogged in California and other states. Unless the smog tech knows exactly what he's looking for, he'll never know it's there.

that aluminum intake is scarier than it looks, it's really not that bulky or heavy to get off of the motor once you've reached all the hardware holding it down

just watched through the video. Needless to say... 1) I'm glad I have an '03 4.7 without the secondary air injection pump 2) I may just pull the damn motor out and do a more in-depth overhaul if I have to replace the starter lol.

I can't imagine doing this on mine with the lift/35's, wide fenders and the coastal off-road bumper with the hoop sticking out up front.
