From what I've read, I believe the shocks are connected via opposite corners so if you replace the fronts with normal assemblies you have to also replace the rears. The first thread seems to have some good info. The link after that is a sticky to all things suspension.
BTW, if you want a cheap route that will last the life of the car, just put used Gen 5 takeoffs on it. The ones I put on my truck were off a 6 month old Gen 5 runner that got lifted. All that is needed is a bit of trimming on the lower shock eyelet.
