I have an 08 SR5 about 5000 miles and I've noticed that when I reverse to get out of a parking spot and go back into Drive, sometimes the shifting lags behind be a noticeable amount of time. This has happened atleast 10-15 times since i have owned it. Enough time for me to rev and it doesnt catch until i shift it back up to N and back down to D. Could there be something wrong with the electronic shifting or does this happen to everyones. If it doesn't i need to know if this is a common thing so I can take it in and get it fixed under warranty.

Mine does it. My guess is that the computer won't let the throttle motor move the throttle plate until the transmission signals "gear change complete". Next, being Mr. Impatient, I step on the gas thinking it should be done transitioning R to D. Now the gas pedal and the throttle plate disagree and I have let off and re-step on the gas or deal with a delay that seems like an eternity accompanied by a goofy, jerky start.

Basically Toyota doesn't want us doing big Neurtral drops

i figured it had something to do with the electronic system they had in place but i just wanted to make sure it wasnt anything more serious like a transmission problem of not shifting in to gear.

The prob is if the situation does happen to me, i have to go completely out of drive then back into it to get it to catch. It just seems like somethings wrong. I could be wrong though. I'll take it in next time i get an oil change or anything else.

I got an '08 SR5 w/32k on it and have not experience this symptom at all. Suggest get this looked at ASAP. Doesn't sound like normal operation.

Burt- v6 or v8? From everything I've read on these forums the v6 & v8 computers control things differently...

I have an 2008 v6 and experience the same thing. The torque converter has a really low stall rate which is great for hill descent control but, the negative is that it pulls the vehicle at idle. Even while idling it will pull the vehicle uphill from a stop. I like to place it into neutral if I am going to sit at a light for a while like I used to all the time with my Jeep Cherokee but, like CRDT4R said it takes about 2 to3 seconds after you place it back into gear before it will give throttle... not a big deal if you know how long the lag will last.

I have not noticed any kind on delayed response in/out of gear at all.

Same here. 2004 V6 4wd. No issues whatsoever.

Maybe mine shouldn't do it then? Just so you understand, my throttle response never hesitates coming out of park and driving it normally. I have to be driving and then go from neutral then back to drive again..that is when it the throttle hesitates for a couple seconds.

Can you try driving your 4runner then come to a complete stop, place it in neutral and then put it in drive and see if you can accelerate right away with good throttle response? These new vehicles monitor so much stuff there might be unusual scenarios that cause these problems to show up?

I only ever notice the issue coming out of reverse. It actually happened today again. I popped it out of reverse and as I went in to drive, it seemed to be in Neutral because i would hit the gas and the engine would rev. I had to pop it into N and then back to D for it to catch. It just seems a bit odd so I will prob check it out in a few weeks after I graduate and am not as busy.

HI EVERYONE! I HAVE AN 03 V8 AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ALL OF YOU CHECK YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID. MY RUNNER HAS 26000 MILES. I CHECKED THE FLUID ONE DAY AND IT WAS LOW ONE QUART!!!!! HAD TO BE FROM THE FACTORT BECAUSE IF YOU DONT HAVE A LEAK TRANSMISSION FLUID DOES NOT EVAPORATE. SO CHECK YOUR FLUID GUYS. I HAVE NO MORE ISSUES AND IT GOES RIGHT INTO GEAR FROM PARK AND SHIFTS SMOOTH AS SILK.

I just went to fill up with gas and played around with shifting a bit... The only way I can get the throttle to hesitate when giving it gas is to put it into neutral after coming to a stop and then put it back in drive then give it gas. It lags/hesitates for about 1 full second and then goes but, it is a delay in engine revs not a slipping or delay in transmission response.

How do I do this? I looked in the engine bay and my owners manual and don't see how to check tranny level?

Doesn't sound like the throttle hesitation that I am experiencing but, it does sound like the reverse to forward problem that CRDT4R is explaining.

I too have the same issue. I have an 06 Se V6. I took it to the dealer after having the same exact experiences as you. It happens to me at least 2x a week. Of course when the dealer tries to experience the problem first hand, after 30 tries nothing happens. So, the tech takes my car to the bay and tries to assess the problem and is unable to do so. They said, "come back when the problem worsens so that we have a better idea what to look for." Fortunately yet unfortunately the problem has not worsened but is so annoying and embarrasing when passengers in the vehicle
