And my Pathfinder is much quicker to accelerate than the 4Runner. However, I checked the specs and it says that the 4Runner 2016 and my PF both have almost same time 0-60MPH: 7.7 vs 7.4s. So I would assume they should accelerate very similar. When I tried the 4R it felt like something was holding it or like its engine was gas starving.
I hope something was simply wrong with that particular 4Runner. What else could it be? Did anyone else experience same issues?
And the thing is - that PFs (they have CVT) are not that fast themself, but, compared to the 4Runner, I could feel a huge difference.
Any comments would be really appreciated since I sit on a fence now.
That topic has been beat to death in many other threads. Check them out.

I have and most acceleration problems are either related to mechanical issues of well used 4Runners or to a driver perception when he/she switches from a more sporty car.

My case is neither one: I am not coming from a sportier car nor the new 4Runner should have any mechanical issues. I also understand that 4Runner engines are specified to generate the torque and not the acceleration.

But judging by your answer I guess this is a normal performance of the 4Runners and this is just the ways the 4Runners are.

Anyway thanks.

You answered your own question in your first post. It's as quick as most other SUV'S but it does not feel like it. If quick or fast even enters your mind when thinking about a 4runner then get something else.

Actually the best thing you can do is test drive a half a dozen times at different times before you buy. Get used to it and see.

OK, since you're new and evidently haven't bothered to read the sticky section; look up there for "How to Search ....".

So much is written on this topic .....

And why on earth are you cross-shopping a 4R and a minivan? With a CVT no less?

Well, I was not looking for a fast car, I just did not expect to feel much of a difference with mine.

I thought about re-testing the 4Runner again, "to get used to it" as you said.

I felt the same way test driving mine. "You can't be serious, right?" For me, the decision was based on the fact there is literally NOTHING else out there to buy in a new off-road worthy SUV since Nissan disco'd the Xterra. Ironically, I too have a 2015 Pathfinder and agree... feels like a sports car compared to the T4R... sorry guys, just the truth. I was coming from a 2006 Xterra with a comparable 4.0L V6 with a great motor and even nearly identical final drive ratios in every gear. T4R feels like a dog comparatively. You just have to wind it up to get any power out of it. Typical Toyota... all mid to high end power.

PS, salesman told me it was cuz the tranny was electronically controlled and "needs to get used to your driving style," lol.

Yeah, Toyota simply has no competitors in this segment.

Hello all, I'm a total noob here to your awesome forum. I'm considering buying a 4WD 4Runner. I've been driving a Pre-runner Xtra Cab the last 15 years and regretted not getting the 4WD. When I was a kid, we used to go out to the mountains or desert in a Jeep CJ for the weekend and go exploring, and I'd like to do be able to do that again..

I'm considering one of the Trail or TRD editions, but am wondering if an SR5 might save me some $$. The thing is, since I drive mainly on regular streets and freeways, I'm thinking it might be well to get a model with KDDS. There are a few 2016 Trail models still around, and I'm going to see if that will save a little money over a 2017 model.

If I get the regular Trail model and not the Trail Premium, isn't the main difference between the two the quality of the stereo system etc.?

Also I've done a little reading about lifting the vehicle slightly more, and there seems to be a difference of opinion about whether that is possible with the KDDS.

Finally, I'm pretty sure that the '16 and '17 models have ATRAC but as someone has noted, it is hard to tell from the Toyota website.

I'm thinking of buying through the Costco program.

Thanks, I know this is old hat for you veterans, but if anyone can offer any advice on the above, or other important factors I may have overlooked, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

It sounds like you have done some homework so I will give you that, but most of this has been covered many times before (as you said) I can relate though sometimes its hard to weed through the answers until you have an established knowledge base. With that said, see red below

It should save you some cash but will limit your options, not everyone is the same and something's just don't matter as much to some but if I am spending 35-50K on something it will be EXACTLY what I want, within the OEM options of course. Basically I am saying don't pay 33 for something you kinda like if it only takes 35 to get something you love

SR5 vs. Trail will really depend on what you plan to do with it/how much you value things like The hood scope, the rear locker, the front and rear valences, the black assents on the interior , various electronic gizmos (multiterrain select & crawl control) for me I loved the trail wheels, loved the black interior accents and the hood scope and valued the rear locker so it was worth while for me to pay the extra $$$, not everyone will be In the same boat

If I get the regular Trail model and not the Trail Premium, isn't the main difference between the two the quality of the stereo system etc.?
Not exactly, this is just a start but puddle lights, turn signal indicators in the mirrors softex interiors , sunroof and autodimming mirrors come to mind on the TEP vs. the TE

Also I've done a little reading about lifting the vehicle slightly more, and there seems to be a difference of opinion about whether that is possible with the KDDS.Lifting a KDSS equipment 4runner is barely harder than a non KDSS equipped 4runner - people/shops are just ignorant. Now if you plan to go Long travel then the KDSS system will have to be ditched but at this point you are not even thinking LT. Edit: KDSS is not the end all be all, its not a maintenance nightmare some make it out to be and its not a god send option that will turn your 4runner into a Rubicon destroyer either.

Finally, I'm pretty sure that the '16 and '17 models have ATRAC but as someone has noted, it is hard to tell from the Toyota website.
To my knowledge all Trails have ATRAC

I'm thinking of buying through the Costco program.
Sounds good, I know others have had decent luck with that. What ever you do be realistic in your expectations. Don't pay MSRP but don't expect 20% off either these are not Chevy's. In 2014 I paid 38,500ish before taxes on a MSRP of I think 41,00ish TEP w/ KDSS. It was not the best deal on the planet but I didn't get bent over either

Thanks, I know this is old hat for you veterans, but if anyone can offer any advice on the above, or other important factors I may have overlooked, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Thanks Engineer, that is great info to start out with.

1. Yes, I need to look at the options vs. price and figure the sweet spot for my needs. I do like the blue color best, and thanks for putting things in perspective, ie. spending that much and getting what I want without being too penny wise etc.

2. I am thinking more about a comfortable everyday vehicle that can also get me to places away from the madding crowd and don't care as much about interior stitching, special lights, electronic gizmos etc. I don't need rock crawling and extreme off-road performance, I just want to be confident of not getting stuck in sand, mud, or scree. I know, boring, huh ?

3. I had to look up Long Travel. Very nice, but for an everyday vehicle probably not practical for me.

4. About the KDDS, some comments suggest it makes on-road driving much smoother. (?)

5. Costco program -- I have purchased a couple of vehicles through them and it is supposed to be "dealer invoice" plus some fixed amount. We'll see what they come up with this time.

6. I think the Trails all have the rear diff lock too(?).

As you've already mentioned, decide what you want and how much you want to pay.

SR5s are plenty capable for everyday driving and with skill, are quite adept off road. Lines are blurred even more in the past few years now that they all have the same skidplates, and Trails and SR5s share the same suspensions (sans KDSS). The big reasons people choose the Trail for is the locking rear diff and the manual transfer case. Few people admit to really being interested in crawl control or multi-terrain select. They all have ATRAC. As long as you aren't set on a fake hood scoop or the silver bumper accents, get the SR5.

The reality is a lot of SUV's, dare I say even uni body based SUVs will get you off-road. The biggest issue is low hanging body panels which is why I give a nod to the SR5 or Trail as a starting point if you don't need the extra luxuries of the limited. Likely obvious but I am just gonna say it , Test drive, Test drive, Test drive the 4runner is not going to be as nice of daily driver as say a highlander or a Jeep grand Cherokee etc far more reliable and better choice for off road endeavors but not as nice on the road

3. I had to look up Long Travel. Very nice, but for an everyday vehicle probably not practical for me. Yupp

4. About the KDDS, some comments suggest it makes on-road driving much smoother. (?) Not exactly, it makes cornering flatter ( ie reduces body roll) by having a much thicker sway bar than w/o KDSS. Driving on a straight road I am not sure anyone could say if the 4runner had KDSS or not (without cheating). Back to the point above, if you can test drive one with and one without see if you notice a differance

5. Costco program -- I have purchased a couple of vehicles through them and it is supposed to be "dealer invoice" plus some fixed amount. We'll see what they come up with this time.

6. I think the Trails all have the rear diff lock too(?).
Correct the trails come with a rear dif locker and a lever (VF2A) vs. dial(VF2BM) activated transfer case but for all intents and purposes its the same unit. Note the early years of the SR5 came with the level actuated case

I am the Service Manager for a Honda Dealership. I bought a 4Runner for one reason only. MACHO! The Pilot is a great vehicle ( that my wife would drive). I decided to get the 4Runner for the brute force, macho facade and the multitude of modifications that I can do ( because of this forum). I wanted the 4Runner so much that I have caught flack from my General Manager, but I know now that it was all worth it. I would do it all over again. Get a 4Runner for what it can do NOT judge it for what it can't do.
*I did buy the 4Runner from a Dealership that we own. GM not happy but the owner loves me.

136,000 vs 205,000 Miles

Hello guys, I cant post a new thread so I'll post it here since this is the 5th gen section. Im ready to pull the trigger on a 2010 or 2011 4runner. Both have two big differences:

- 2010 4Runner: 205,000 Miles for $12,200
2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5 cuir toit prix pour vente rapide for $16,488 in Cowansville | autoTRADER.ca

- 2011 4Runner: 136,000 Miles for $16,750
2011 Toyota 4Runner 4WD V6 SR5 for $21,944 in Barrie | autoTRADER.ca

Price and kilo are in Canadian so I changed for you guys un US and Miles.

Im coming form 2 jeeps and 1 FJ, just need your advice in price and millage... it is too much 205k vs 136k?

Need your advice,

Thank You

John

@old.ink I would pay the extra $4K less 70k less miles. Worth it to me.

Also the rust on the black one is sorta concerning. On the silver one you should get them to throw in new tires if you're not planning to upgrade already.
