Lots of "slung" grease by boot connecting to wheel carrier

A while back I installed Bilsteins all around. Saw no issues at time. Yesterday I was adding spacers and pulled the passenger side front wheel. There was "slung" grease spattered around on the parts around the back of the wheel carrier. In other words it looked like wherever it was coming from was spinning. I assume it has to do with that rubber boot (CV axle?) that connects the wheel carrier hub.

Any obvious diagnosis?

Just the obvious one you stated. Your CV boot has failed. Replace it quickly or you'll have to replace the entire CV axle.

Makes sense. So question....once I get the axle out..what do I need to look for to decide whether I need to replace the boots or the entire axle? Not sure how long it's been slinging grease.
 
Yep, depending on how much lifted it it'll angle the joints and they'll stretch and leak a bit usually at the clamped ends. I had this happen on my FJ, replaced the clamps no more leaks. Did you put a diff drop on it?
 
Do this first:
1) Order set of bands and CV grease (Redline makes good stuff)
2) Remove old bands
3) Slide the boot out of the way
4) Clean the joint
5) Pack the grease into joint
6) Clamp with new bands

Always start with easiest and cheapest when replacing things. Obviously your current bands failed or your grease is broken down into milkshake like liquid and both are bad if not fixed.
 
I can't remember the total lift in inches. I did the Bilstein 5100's at the highest adjustment setting up front and the 5100's in back with Icon springs. As I recall that setup lifted me about 2" net. I did not put a diff drop on it. I assume that's a differential drop. Should I? I just got done working on it. Everyone was right no tear in the boot just leaking at the band. I repacked the grease and put heavy duty zip tie on it until I can get some of these replacement bands. Thanks for the help guys.

Let me know the bene's of the diff drop.
