The sweeter tweeter: install solution for the 5th generation 4runner dash tweeters

So first of all, why is this worth posting? Well, for the fifth generation four runner there is an absence of a wiring harness for the dash tweeter and the presence of four wires, linking the dash tweeter to the front door speaker. There's also an absence of a speaker bracket for the site. So it's quite possible that you're very short weekend project could turn into a long one as you try to sort through the four wire problem and mounting issues. Here's how things look starting out after you remove the plastic grill by gently prying up the grill, starting from back to front.


After you detach the wiring harness from the back of the speaker you find there are four wires instead of two. That is because two of these continue to the door speaker. For reference per [MENTION=83083]rigtec[/MENTION]: The LT GREEN and BLUE wires are coming from the headunit and feed the tweeter. From there (via a jumper in the speaker harness network), the PINK and PURPLE wires go down to feed the door speakers (in parallel: 4ohms divided by 2 = 2ohms).

I opted to detach the wiring harness from the back of the speaker by gently prying up the blue portion from the metal portion. It's only attached with adhesive. Then cut the wires right at the prongs for the actual speaker.


Now sharply cut the cone out of the speaker leaving the phone ring on the outside of the stock bracket


Feed the wires for your new Tweeter through the bottom of the stock bracket. Then solder them to the stock wiring harness. Set the tweeter down into the bracket. I secured to the bottom of the bracket using double-sided tape.


Attach the wiring harness connected to the tweeter to the wiring harness in the vehicle. Bolt bracket back into place. Here you go

Well it sounds better to me in combination with upgrading the rest of the speakers in the vehicle. That said, it could probably sound better with 3.5's. thanks for the link. Didn't see it when I was researching.

Man great job. I just finished stuffing some 3.5" into the dash and if I had to do it again I'd just do tweeters. I was already thinking about making some custom mounts more focally directed but yours are excellent and reuse the stock hardware.

i'm about to replace the speakers in my TRDP this weekend. I purchased from taco tunes, wiring harnesses and speaker mounts for the whole thing. I will make a thread with my speaker replacement when i do it.

also just to note i have no connection to this company, just what I found online.

I just completed this with the gx302 and it makes a big difference. I just reused the blue stock harness and soldered the wires together. Good thing you bought the 6x9 plates because you cannot reuse the stock 6x9 speaker frame.

Sub grill

I have a 2017 4runner limited and my sub grill doesn't have the JBL badge. I see others 2017s that do. Is it just a sticker or emblem that can easily come off or is something wrong with mine?

I just installed a set of FT1 super tweeters from Crescendo audio. The sound improvement is phenomenal. I installed the crossovers they recommend with them and had to mount them to the grill since they are so big, but it looks pretty still. Also retained the factory plug from the original speaker.

EDIT: THE BUILT IN CROSSOVERS ONLY APPLY TO THE TWEETER. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ADDING BASS BLOCKERS TO THESE SPEAKERS.
I installed some Rockford P132's 3.5" speakers in the dash location. Sounds better but not a tremendous difference like some say. The difference between my system is that I already have an aftermarket deck installed.

I chose the Rockford P132 because it has a built in crossover that cuts off low frequencies. Frequencies below 120Hz at 4ohms are elminated. However our front speaker set up operates between 2 ohms to 3.5 ohms because of shared wiring from the front door speakers. This set up changes the frequency cutoff to 240hz to 120hz which still leaves plenty of mid to high frequency sounds to be produced.

As far as mounting options, I used the OEM mounting brackets and trimmed them. It was easier than i expected. I'll try to snap some pics to show you guys how I did it.

PASSENGER SIDE:




I basically took the OEM bracket, pliers and bent them up and down until I broke off pieces to get the desired shape I needed. I discarded the middle bar of the OEM mounts. Unfortunately for the passenger side I was only able to use one side of the mount but was able to use existing holes to mount my speaker. I put some thin plastic liner between the bottom of the speaker and the air conditioning vent. Paranoid me wants to prevent rubbing that might put a hole in the A/C vent. I also trimmed away the passenger side grill to prevent the speaker from hitting it. Some creativity required. Still very proud of this install.

DRIVER SIDE:



Driver side was a breeze. I did the same thing with the OEM brackets and everything just screwed in almost like an OEM setup.

Amendment. Update. F-up?

So. After completely relying on crutchfield.com to tell me what can fit in my 5th gen and not doing what I normally do (i.e. Come here to the forum, heavily research, plan, implement) I feel compelled to update:

While I thought I was being clever by recycling the wiring harness and bracket from the 3" FULL RANGE speaker to install the tweeter crutchfield recommended (the only thing they say will fit,actually) [MENTION=92268]Auntie Soshul[/MENTION] pointed out that this might decrease the dynamic range of the system. The tweeter definitely improved things, but curiosity got the better of me, so I purchased 3.5" infinity reference speakers and installed them with the same wiring harness trick I pulled above, plus the capacitor/crossover removal here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...le-difference-kappa-3-5-dash-speakers-11.html and the bracket trim here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/215918-dash-speakers-2.html (another option seen above) and don't forget to trim the grill (also in [MENTION=148166]1jzgte[/MENTION] post above)

There is no question. Install 3.5's. it makes a huge improvement, better than any other speaker pair I replaced (I redid all of them). I tried to delete the thread to avoid confusion, but since it won't go away I will just add this to hopefully avoid confusion for those doing future research.

Underside with crossover and oe plug. I have given demos to people and they remarked how loud and clean these are. Really am happy with their performance.

This post was excellent. I did it a little different though. The front door speaker wires on my 2010 4runner where green and blue on both sides (use a 9volt battery to "pop" the speakers to be sure in yours). I cut out the factory dash speaker as above to use as a mount for the tweeter. The difference for me is I used Infinity PR9610CS 6" x 9" Two-Way Component Speaker System and replaced the factory front door speakers as well. I cut the factory 4 wire plug off and tied the infinity crossover (is it like 2"x2"x3/4") right in the dash. I removed the factory blue plastic cross over from the factory dash speaker and used double sided tape to attach the infinity crossover to the air duct under the factory speaker cage. I used Metra 82-8146 6" x 9" Front Speaker Adapter for Select Lexus and Toyota Vehicles to install the Infinity 6x9s in the doors. Whole job took about an hour and sounds great. I know people are not going to want to cut the factory 4 wire plug (I generally agree with not cutting factory plugs off) but all I can say is I will never remove these speakers and put factory back in so it should never matter.

Tweeter Resistor

Hi,

I am trying to reduce the harshness and power in my DS-18 tweeters. I have added Rockford Fosgates to the wholes system and these tweeters are a bit much. I have a 22 ORD and it's non JBL. Would I wire a resistor into the blue wire before the connector for the tweeter which I believe feeds the capacitor or is it the green wire? Thanks!
