Is the 5th gen falling out of favor?

Also I live in a huge security complex, and the number of 5th gen 4runners have gone from 2 of us to maybe 15 or so, with 3 of them being heavily modified. Also lots of taco's....I mean lots of taco's

Not sure where you’re getting this perception, or what you mean by ‘parting out’. Personally, I just bought a 2019 TRD Off Road. Wonderful vehicle.

The issue you're seeing isn't the truck falling out of favor at all. It's 2 things:
1) A lot of people have this dream - from their cubicle in the Matrix - of this wild, adventurous lifestyle of exploration. But the reality is that they put together the perfect vehicle for it, and then have zero guts and nuts to actually leave the Matrix and do said exploring. So then their spouse and their accountant convince them to sell it, lol.
2) The demographic who goes for the 5th gen, ie, middle management Matrix guy, also has a severe OCD prepper/consumer-whorist mentality, as detailed in Fight Club with the Ikea catalog. So there are a ton of folks who are "building" and "instagramming" these brutal battle-beasts that are stock weight (4,500 lbs) +1,500 lbs of steel armor, wheels, bumpers, etc, in pursuit of the perfect stance and look... and then they realize that all the race-ready and aftermarket parts aren't OEM R&Ded, and thus require a metric sh*tton of maintenance and bi-annual rebuilds and lots of grease to keep away the squeaks... and they end up cutting their losses and selling.
So that's what you're seeing.
That said, I do have an uncanny ability to see the future, and for about a year now, I've been wondering how this forum's for-sale section will look when gas hits $5/gallon. I think there will be some tasty part and used built-trucks for sale lol

The current platform is pushing ten years. The technology is dated. Drive train is dated. The interior needs to be refreshed. And every swinging Tom, Dick, and Harry has a lifted 4Runner.... I used to be one of only a few in my area with lifted 4Rs. I can think of half a dozen at work, and a couple on the way. It's not as exciting anymore. :boom:

It may or may not be but I have no plans on over modding :banana: then selling :bored:. As I identify my actual needs I will then research, think about it and then after a month or three look at it again. I love all the mods so far. Others may prefer a different methodology to modifications. More power to them as I benefit from their shared experiences.

lol!! The first thing when I read the OP's post was to head to the FS section before continuing...
I'll take $5-6 dollars a gallon for a few years if it meat I had the pick of all those new parts that have never been off road

As a fifteen year owner of a 4th generation (V8) 4Runner, I concur. I love this vehicle but I'll be damned if I am going to pay $38 - 48K for a ten year old platform (albeit very reliable) with an under-powered engine, archaic five speed transmission, and completely devoid of the modern safety features (BSM, rear cross-traffic, lane departure, radar speed and breaking, etc.) that even my daughter's $20K Mazda3 has.
I have been waiting a few years to upgrade my 4Runner but next spring I will move on to something else.
I commend Toyota's commitment to quality and reliability but in this day and age with technology moving so rapidly, even a 5 - 7 year generation lifespan is too long. I would have thought that Toyota would at least do a refresh a few years ago and add some of these features.
