Is the 5th gen falling out of favor?

Yep and it didn't happen. Even the Saudi's recognized those conditions could not be sustained. This was 10 years ago, memory is very fuzzy, but I remember they adjusted, prices went down, shale gas was/in growing thus prices went down............... however, oil/gas/dinosaurJuice/whatever is a finite commodity. With Shale, I saw somewhere the US can be self reliant for decades to come, but again, it is finite. Eventually it will run out. Prices will increase over time. For the time being, low gas prices could be with us for a time. I wouldn't bet money that it will stay that way.
I for one, wouldn't mind an electrified 4Runner. Ludicrous speed anyone?????????

Boy do I! That summer, at the peak, I took the family to mountain bike Disneyland in Whistler BC. I pulled my travel trailer with my diesel SUV from N California and at 44 gallons at a time, one fill up was over $200 and it got me 450 miles.
Start bringing out the pitchforks and start intimidating prospective buyers at the new car dealers because there's no way in hell Toyota is rushing to R&D/test/retool/produce a new vehicle.
They're printing money with their 4Runner factories. Factory workers could have gotten knocked up, nurtured offspring, and paid for their kid's post-secondary education by the time the 6th gen is released. Seriously, it's the vehicle that keeps on giving with minimal fuss and upkeep. Little marketing dollars sprinkled here and there and people are still buying them at a rate that they have never seen before. It is every manufacturer's wet dream, if only it were possible to find a wife with those exact attributes!
PS. They can't hear you over all the money counting machines and their equivalent of a Brinks truck backing up.

There are reasons why Toyota isn't in a hurry. And bye bye to the 4.0 V6, a solid engine some that drive new Tacoma's think is better than the new 3.5 V6. And also get ready for the new transmission to hunt for gears especially if you do any modifications to it involving weight.
I like the simplicity of my 2017. Less to break when wheeling.
Now what is number 1 on my list of complaints? Grabby breaks. You need to stop fairly rapidly but not lock them up, brakes tend to grab, then when you let off it's too much. Can be dangerous in rush hour traffic.

You obviously do not work with technology. There are no real limitations if you want to waste money chasing your clients desires. But at some point you have to decide what you want your product to do and deploy it. None of the options you mention will make my driving experience better. We all had to compromise when we decided to get the vehicle we have. Stop overthinking it and accept that you can have great quality and reliability or you can buy a ford or chevy or whatever make vehicle that has the features you listed.

At 60 years old I have owned many vehicles and believe I know what I want and need.

107,000km/5.5 years later, I would say the most annoying thing about my 4Runner is it drives just like the day I bought it. It might not have the best tech, but these things are just built to amazing standards. The cost of ownship is insanely low because they hold their value so well. I tossed around the idea of getting a Yukon, but I am almost absolutely certain I will hold on until the 6th Gen, as tempting as it might be to bail. Toyota’s are timeless and I’m glad they don’t screw around with the platform every few years. I find almost every domestic looks like crap after 5 years. They just don’t age well.
Anyway, no, they aren’t going out of favour. I’m seeing more and more in Nova Scotia, which is sort of surprising because, while Canadians buy a lot of trucks and SUV’s, the “suvs” tend to be small-midsize crossovers like CRV’s, Escapes, RAV’s etc. We can get pretty messy winters, so 4wd can be obviously appealing.

I totally agree with you about the brakes. Definitely a dim spot. They are so hard to modulate. Worst I've experienced on any vehicle I've owned or driven.
I have scared the shot out of myself a couple of times stomping on the brakes
FWIW I am seeing more 5th Gens than ever around here...done nothing but increase in popularity since the body re-design...from seeing one or two around when I got my 2015....to seeing car friends daily in my 2018.
I love my 4Runners (2001 and 2018)..my only grip about the 2015/18 is at the part time 4WD transfer case, criminal on a four wheeler that costs so much. To get the real 4WD, buy a Limited? Be terrified to take that off-road..lol

So you bought it to try to impress others....? It sounds like you bought the TRD as a status symbol and it’s disappointing that’s it’s not as cool anymore. I can’t imagine any other logic reason you’d hope people aren’t parting out and moving on to other platforms after you bought one.
I’m happy about it, I hope more people move along. I’m absolutely ok with picking up high quality parts barely used from mall crawlers for a good price.

What I saw in the xterra world was that people who did a titan swap (mid-travel) generally sold their modded xterra after not too long. Could be that the next step to increase travel was to SAS it, but either way, once a rig is built up to the max, you get bored with it. Sell it and start another project. And it has nothing to do with "toyota reliability". IMO, they aren't bulletproof like some other vehicles in the world.
Personally, I don't really see people moving on from the 4runner, though it would be cool to see less of them on the road.

If it is falling out of favor, resale values and sales numbers would have indicated. Both numbers are better than ever. If you know Toyota, they don't change things unless it is a government says so, or there is a market reason like competition eats sales.
There is still nothing competes head to head in market. Wrangler? No, not at all. Most people buy wranglers as 3rd vehicle, something for fun. 4runner is a primary vehicle. Current gen wrangler after newest iteration still not able to fill the gap, 3500 lbs towing, questionable reliability, smaller cargo space. Same as Grand Cherokee not competing with 4runner.
And if you think 5th gen falls out of favor when 6th gen comes, I am not even sure that. If 6th gen comes with a lot of "modernization" such as turbos, a lot of electronics, without a solid axle, a weird transmission and etc, 5th gen may be still in favor.
I m more into the argument that around mid 2020s to 2030s, 5th gens will be sought after vehicle for off road enthusiasts similar to what is now for FJ80s of 1990s.

How do you know this? What problems have the 5th gen 4Runners had that would suggest they aren't bulletproof. Do Prado 150's around the world have any issues? There aren't enough high mileage 5th gens out there to make any conclusions and say that they are or aren't bulletproof. I think I've seen one person say they had 220k on theirs. At this point 150k would be a lot for a 5th gen. They just haven't been out long enough to prove that they are as reliable as a 80 or 100 series and reach 300-400k but that doesn't mean they can't be. Time will tell but nothing at this point says otherwise.
Why is everybody so angry today? LOL. I've made peace with what Toyota hasn't provided in the 5th gen. Until the redesign comes, there's no sense in re-engineering anything substantial. They'd never see a return on that investment of time and resources. So, we drive what we have. Rage at them jacking up the MSRP. And wait...
Maybe up by you there are. Down on this end, I see more and more stock ones. Driving around I have seen 4 (to include mine) in my area that are modified. (that doesn't count the meet from last month)
I do see more people with the TRD Pros that look like they will never leave pavement. :ybrick:
Besides being a 10yr old platform. When people start to look at the cost of the modifications, and the insurance premium increase (for those that actually do that), it scares them off.
