Is the 5th gen falling out of favor?

I think this thread is exactly the reason Toyota is taking a long time with the 6th gen. Basic reliability vs new tranny and engine (the new Tacos, mentioned earlier...transmission is horrid), safety tech, interior tech, etc.

I COULD see a complete overhaul leaving T4Rs costing >50k... This has not been the T4R market of the past.

I do agree I would like safety features, mostly BSM, sway control, collision avoidance / emergency auto breaking, etc. I hate the excuse that safety features wouldn't mesh well when taking the vehicle offroad...have a switch to turn it off?

Towing package, diesel engine, safety features, and somehow retain proven reliability exemplary of the Toyota brand...that's the crux! This would be my idea of the perfect vehicle...though certainly more expensive. If they move towards something like the Fortuner, I will be quite sad. I love my still blocky exterior.

For now I'm more than happy with my current, simple, body on frame reliable T4R that will last!

I’m one who wonders how the safety sensors would mesh with off road driving. I understand that a bypass or defeat switch could be employed. But maybe an automaker has to consider the potential liabilities that such a switch might create. For example, Busy Bob gets back on pavement and forgets to re-enable his safety system. Since he’s used to driving with it on, he expects it to warn him of hazards. However, he has a collision, partly because a proximity sensor didn’t warn him. Is the automaker liable for having a defeatable system in the first place? I’m asking because I don’t know.

Maybe it already exists - does someone know if there’s a true off road vehicle with the T4R’s capabilities that also has all these sensors active? If so, are they a nuisance when off road, or no problem?
 
Toyota sold more 4Runners in August of this year than they've ever sold in a month and September was only a few hundred short of that. 2018 will be the best sales year for the 4Runner ever.

This thread has absolutely no basis in reality whatsoever.

Seriously. It's nearly a decade old so of course there would be some turnover. People get bored with something or needs change. Likewise the more people buy it may seem that more are switching to something else. But I'd say that for every one person that switches to another platform that 10 more are buying it.
 
On my road trip from Austin, TX to Astoria, OR a couple months ago, the western US was absolutely crawling with brand new ones. I can't imagine the sales are anything but on the up and up.

I think a couple things are worth considering, first that most all these safety features can be turned off in other Toyota vehicles that have them... second that they are assists and should be used as such... and finally that certain features could be made to only turn off when in four low.

If the 5th gen is so "out of date" and it sucks, why are you here on the 5th gen page? Go back and hang out on the 4th gen page where you can worship how "great" it is :wave:
 
I'll admit - I'm bored with my 5th gen. Nothing wrong with it. Just kinda reached the point where anything more mod wise means major irreversible frame modifications. I'm not really into farkle, so no light bars, roof racks etc. And the reality of my boredom is that I've had it for almost 4 years now, not that it's any different or less desirable than it was then.

I have been pretty seriously looking at trading for an LC200. Mostly for the engine. I'd buy a new 4Runner model if it had a better engine. I don't really need anything else changed other than auto headlights. Give me a refresh with a 2.5 4cyl turbo and an 8AT I'll trade overnight. I'd actually prefer that the suspension and such remain similar so I could keep all my suspension and swap it over.
 
We came back from Moab this weekend, didn't see that many 4runners up there. Even had a guy question me about taking the 4runner off road.
 
Not sure, but I am seeing way more dealers willing to sell a 2019 Pro at sticker. This is good for me as I will be buying one in 2019. Anyone else seeing this trend?

I think because they're producing more of them than previous years. IMO, they see the demand and market for them, so they're producing more of the pros just to make more profit. Think about it, everyone gets discounts on every other trim level. The pro is the only one that people buy at MSRP or more, because it is a "limited" production truck. Might as well cash in on as many people as possible with the "limited" production illusion. But I could be totally off and wrong.

It's funny seeing all these 2018 Pros being discounted back to MSRP from a $10-15k markup because the 2019s have better suspension/sound and a moonroof. Also because the 2019 Tacomas now are offered in Cavalry Blue, so there's a bunch of sitting Pro 2018 Cavalry Blues being listed back at MSRP after the dealers were charging $55k+ for them. Karma!

I see a lot of 2018 pro's suddenly being listed at a 2019 msrp. IMO it will return to normal when the 2018's are all gone.

Thanks for the info. I actually didn’t know they could be turned off (I’m not up to speed, obviously). Also, the 4Lo feature would be a good idea.

I agree that they’re assists, but I also know people develop dependencies on new tech over time - me included. So today’s assist ends up being tomorrow’s need, or mandate. I don’t guess we’ll be able to change human nature, eh?

I am waiting to see what Toyota does with the 6th gen 4Runner along with what they do with the next GX460 and Tundra. I would love to see a barn door with a spare on the back (mitigates my need for a swing out rear bumper), either V8 or twin turbo motor with 7-8sp transmission, HIDs, and updated infotainment. A lot of what I want is just a Prado 150 really. The current GX460's require too much work to get the right clearances and way too much bumper cutting.

If I don't like whatever comes next I'll either consider adding a Magnuson SC to my current 5th gen or trade it in for a CPO 200 series Land Cruiser. I drove my girlfriends 2nd gen Taco with the TRD SC on it and man, that thing hauls up a mountain like no other. You don't even realize you're going 80mph up the mountain since its so smooth.

I agree with this. We really want a 200-Series LC but we've been waiting to see the redesign before we jump in on a $80K SUV. Once we buy one it'll likely become a vehicle that sticks around 15+ years or more and will become a third vehicle or second home vehicle once it's fallen out of favor as the DD with the other half.

For now we are sitting on and enjoying our lightly modified TRD Pro knowing that when the time comes to move to the LC that we will get top dollar for the Pro and we won't lose much at all, if any, in the process.
 
Just my uneducated opinion, but I believe the newly designed 2019 RAV4 is a precursor to what is in the next generation Runner.
