What are some essential and/or needed tools to keep in the vehicle?

We now carry our 5 gallon jug for any desert trail and depending on the trail also more water on the side, in case the container craps on us. Individual bottles so that we can carry water if needed, too.

And that's considering that we drive zero desert miles from mid-March to October.

Yeah, I would wait for his new book to be published. If you get the current one, I can tell you some of the changes he is making.

He lists the recovery etc equipment that is generally considered necessary as well as all the basic driving techniques.

It is a complete guide.

For EDC I always have:

- Vehicle trauma bag (nearly identical to my deployment bag)
- Set of two way radios
- Purple K fire extinguisher
- Rechargeable jump starter kit
- Swedish army goretex field jacket (best raincoat I've ever had) that I traded for an OEF-issue multicam top/bottom
- Ratchet with socket set
- Case of water
- ammo can with tie downs/tape/rope
- 2x MREs
- 2x Headlamps
- Baby wipes
- A knife or two
- Common sense

You NEVER want to hook up a tow or snatch strap to a tow ball. Please get yourself the proper tow shackle

The tow ball has, and will shear off creating a 2inch missile that will take out anything in its path, including your head.

On the gloves I would clarify both leather or garden gloves for working + medical gloves for really dirty tuff. Mechanics use them; why shouldn't I?

I have a simple socket set, a set of jumper cables, a charged jumper box, a 12v air compressor, bungee cords, paracord, a molle bag of pliars of various sizes, a fire extinguisher, recovery strap and shackles, fold out shovel, recovery hitch, knife, multi-tool, maglight, a first aid kit, some ponchos and plastic bags for when I go to concerts, and a roll of paper towels. I have most of these mounted on my Rago Molle panels

Excellent thread, tons of usefull stuff on here. I live up at a mile high in Prescott, AZ but work in Phoenix. +1 on having plenty of water. 5-7 gallons is wise.

This was never really on my list until after my last trip.

Extra / Spare bolts. Carry a bag of extra bolts from shock bolts to caliper bolts etc.

We were half way through Mojave Rd and my buddy started to slow down and reported when he was braking, he was hearing a loud metal on metal shuttering. We were next to hole in the wall, so we parked at the visitor center to investigate. Turns out, it was his front passenger lower brake caliper bolt. It was freakin missing! Upon more investigation 2 out of the 4 bolts on the lower trunnion were also freakin missing. We came to the conclusion that those 2 bolts were shaking the wheel assembly enough to get the caliper bolt out. Luckily, his LC80 had his full toolbox in his drawers and he had a bag of spare bolts. We found some that fit perfectly and even torqued them down to spec. That trail repair could not have gone any better and if he didnt have those bolts, we would have had to cut the trip short to travel back to get bolts after parking it.

Just finished replenishing my tool bag for my 4Runner and went to Harbor freight. What a store, its like the dollar store of tools. lol

Not overly happy with there quality but got some needed items like pliers, vice grips. Then i went to Sears and they are closing the store so i got a lot of my replacement tools there for 60% + off. I got a 75 tooth 1/2" ratchet for $10 and a full metric and standard wrench set for $15. lol

I bought a rollup tool bag and filled it with a basic tool set. 3/8" ratchet with the most common metric sockets, flat & philips screwdrivers, slip joint pliers, needle nose pliers, wire cutters, wrenches, adjustable wrench, pair of nitrile gloves, hex key wrenches, and some zip ties. I also have a small set of jumper cables too (in their own bag).

My only advice for this thread is:

Don't carry "unproven" tools in your emergency kit.

I mean don't buy new tools to specifically carry in a vehicle. Instead new tools go into the toolbox in the garage, and known good and working tools get rotated into the emergency kit.

Good advice if you are buying lower tier tools or have some already proven ones to swap. But if you buy top quality right from the start there should be no need.
