Aside from tools, other important things I keep with me at all times are jumper cables, battery jumpstarter, duct tape, WD40, zip ties, extra fuses, spare headlight bulbs.
What are some essential and/or needed tools to keep in the vehicle?

Good lesson. Carrying first aid and knowing first aid, very different. Just like everything else in life. The knowledge is far more important then the product.

A 4runner can be disassembled with a 10mm wrench and flathead screwdriver.
It's held together with seven bolts and 13,000 plastic clips.
I currently carry only recovery gear, survival items, and first aid.

I carry too much junk
I carry/have carried pretty much everything everybody has listed already at some point or another, still carry a buncha stuff out of habit from when I drove trucks that required a lot of work. I have used my tire plug kit and little cheapo Slime inflator more than anything besides the 10mm wrench and socket. If I could only carry 1 thing, based on my experience I reckon it would be a tire repair kit.

2. Portable CB radio.
3. Extensive First Aid kit (including "Medicine for Mountaineering")
4. Mag Lite, knife, assortment of tools.
5. Jumpers, air compressor, flares.
6. G.I. blanket and bivvy sacks (2)
