5th gen quirks and difference between years
Hey all,
I'm currently in an 06 sport but looking to upgrade to a 5th gen. One thing that has always annoyed me about my rig is that it doesn't have an operable traction control (I think they started this functionality on the 4th gens in 2007).
As far as I can tell, all of the 5th gens have an operable traction control, so I'm good there, but my question for the squad is: what is the equivalent of this quirk for the 5th gens? Did any of the years have any weird features that are universally hated? Do any years lack specific features that you would expect them to have (like a trac control)? My take is that the features and functions got a lot more consistent on the 5th gens compared to the 4th gens -- would folks agree?
TIA for the help/thoughts!

The only quick/dislike of my 2019 is it loves to eat rocks with the windshield (Colorado roads), the paint will scratch if you breathe hard enough on it, and the headunit is about 15 years behind the times.
Otherwise I love this thing (more power would be nice but it gets me everywhere I need to go)

Oh, I got one. The horn in my last 5th gen, a 2010, was absolutely embarrassing. Just an awful high pitched squeak. I think they corrected this for the 2011 model year. My '19 is fine.

what do you mean by "it loves to eat rocks"? like the angle of the windshield makes it more conducive to taking rocks from the road?

Yes - between the angle of the windshield and the amount of rocks on the road, I'm due for windshield #3. Just putting off the inevitable a bit longer. I'd assume within a few months of getting my new one it will have chips/cracks. Also doesn't help I drive through a 19 mile interstate construction zone every day I do go to the office... that's usually the biggest area for rocks.
In 6 years and 150K on my pickups (Chevy and GMC) I never had a single chip/crack in my windshields, maybe the roads, maybe the angle, not really sure.

As someone who lives on C470 in Denver, Sundy speaks the truth on the rock magnet.

Honestly, I think the biggest questions to ask yourself are if you have any specific trim preferences and if you mind the pre-facelift styling (which I want to say runs from 2010 to 2013 or so). The trail trim pre facelift was particularly interesting, but also pretty rare (as it wasn't produced in big numbers and the vehicles sold less back then anyway).
Otherwise the only really big update I think came in with all of the electronics upgrades in 2020 (which I imagine may be beyond where your budget would put you).

This is true and if you get a 2020+ the windshield is $1500 to replace and recalibrate.

With added weight, whether it's gear or mods or both, the cruise control gets exponentially worse. This is due in part to lack of power but the programming is annoying. My 12' is always downshifting on the slightest grade or headwind. Maybe this was corrected in later years. Really my only complaint and I've gotten used to just shifting into sport for a few second to minutes at a time. But, I could see where this would be a deal breaker for some people.

I'm hoping that the 2019 and earlier windshield can be put on there, and I'll just have no TSS in that case.

Give it time, high quality aftermarket windshields will be available soon and a lot less than that.

Nope, the new ones do it too. So did my second gen Tacoma. Not sure why Toyota can’t program it to be a bit smoother.

I think it's all the construction on that never ending widening project on I25 north of you. White knuckle drive every time I go to the Springs!

The cruise control sucks before you add any weight to the vehicle - it only gets worse from there. I often worry I'll get pulled over for speeding due to it overshooting coming up a hill or facing a headwind.
My only other minor complaint (outside of the head unit) is that the intermittent wipers don't have a great set of speed selections. For minor rain the low setting seems to be overkill.
