I'm considering purchasing one of these pricey things because of all the great reviews it gets. But I'm wondering how well the Duo fits in the back of our 5th gens. This would be without anything but a shallow leveling platform. The mat is 52 inches wide and it's about 43.5 inches between the wheel wells so it would be squeezed somewhat. But would that be too much squeezing? Anyone have pics?
Anyone use an Exped Megamat Duo in the back?

I was just looking at one of these also. I think the duo fits snug but you'll want a single if you plan to have a cooler or gear in the back.

You will want to remove the rear seat bottoms and level the floor with about a 2 inch platform. I have an Exped Duo mattress (not a MegaMat) and it works for me.
I think you're mixing up the products.
The Exped MegaMat Duo is about 41" wide, which will fit between the wheel wells without any squeezing.
The Exped MegaMat Duo Long Wide Plus (LW+) is 52" wide, and it will definitely not fit between the wheel wells comfortably.
*If you're looking at REI, the 52" is the product they sell. They haven't offered the 41" in awhile*
I've had both and the LW+ definitely doesn't fit between the wheel wells. If you're by yourself, it may be okay, however if 2 people are using the mat, it will be uncomfortable.
TL;DR - There are 2 products with similar names. The 41" is perfect between the wells, and 52" works great on a sleep system above the wells.

Yeah they have a bunch of sizes, and you are correct that they are definitely the gold standard when it comes to car camping mattress pads.

The 41 inch width x 72 Regular inch length fits perfectly between the wells.
If you move the driver and pass seats forward a little and put two Rubbermaid Actionpacker totes, or something similar, behind the seats to fill the gaps, you have a great sleeping setup for two people.
BTW I wanted a less expensive and more collapsible mat so I got the Exped SynMat Duo in Regular size from REI.

I remember buying the narrow one (41" wide) first to see if it would fit- width was okay but I think I remember the length being a problem without modification (removing the seat bottoms for the 2 row, or making a platform etc.).
Since it was awkward and I didn't want to mess with platforms or removing seats, I ended up returning it for the wide version (52") so we could be more comfortable and have more room in the ground tent.
The Exped mats- especially the big megamat duo- are absolutely incredible in regards to comfort and insulation. Most air mattresses will get cold because they're just the inflatable pool toy style. These have a high R-value (like 8 or 9?) so they stay warm even when camping on snow. Worth the price of admission, especially if you can snag one on sale or with your REI dividend. The weight and bulkiness makes them impractical for anything other than car camping though.

Hmmm... If you look under Specs it’s the 52 inch wide. If that’s what you want.
They had the option for either size. Looks like the smaller one sold out.
