Best speculation of a 2023 6th generation I have seen

I just purchased a new 2024 TRD Off Road and had no concern that the new 4 Runner would be that much of a better vehicle all the way around. With the generation 5 success over the past years, I find the demand for them to stay pretty much the same over the next 10 years, plus. I personally think they will be like the FJ's and the demand will always be there. I only see fuel mileage as a concern for some, but 4 Runner buyers that is not their biggest concern, reliability is #1 for them. For myself I want to stay away from all the new electronics that vehicles have today and Turbo engines are just one thing I can pass on. When I saw a video on YouTube on the new 2024 Tacoma and the 2.4 Turbo engine I was speechless on how it looked under the hood, hose, tubes, wires, nightmare. I guess time will tell.

It is a hard decision. For me it's the hybrid 4R and possibly the Tacoma that I'm considering. The extra power and MPGs are tempting but who knows what the price will be. In a few years I plan on driving the Pan-American and Europe in something. The new hybrid Tacoma with the 2400 plug in the back and a Hiatus camper might be the best option since I can't import a new Troop Carrier. Still waiting for Taco hybrid pricing and the reveal of the 6th gen before I decide to get a 2024 4R or not.

If you are seriously contemplating heading out into the wilds of the Pan-American highway, dodging the cartel bullets or machetes as you travel, and you are in anything other than old school technology, please reconsider what happens when a new, electronic laden, unproven platform, breaks down in the middle of nowhere.

When you are hundreds of miles from a Toyota dealer and have no knowledge, analyzers or spare parts to fix a modern vehicle, out of what you can carry in the back, that is not the time to consider your life choices, now is the time, while 24 4Runners or 23 Tacoma's, or something similar are still available. Regardless, make sure you get at least 10,000 miles on the odometer in the US, before you go, so you don't have any infant mortality on your journey.

Very good advice. This will be in 3-4 years and I will be starting from the East Coast of Canada to Prudhoe Bay then south so by the time I hit the Mexican border I should have 25000 kms on it. If I could put a hercules roof on a 24 4Runner I would definitely go in a 4Runner. By that time I am hoping the 4th gen tacoma hybrid will be proven reliable, if not a low mileage 3rd gen would be my choice.

Ultimately a Troopy with the roof conversion is my first choice. I can import anything into Canada 15 years or older. I would prefer a new one from the UAE but I would have to find a third country that I could ship it to, register it and then travel with that country's plate.

Biggest concern is not putting too big of a target on my back or "vehicle". Rolling through these areas in too rich of a ride can attract the wrong type of attention. I'm following a couple doing the trip in a new Mercedes Revel van. Can't wait to see how they do.

Yes, there is a lot of violence there and corrupt cops. Most of the Youtubers I follow who are doing this trip have the most problems in Mexico. We will see what it's like in a few years. Most of these guys are off the road before sunset and stay in gated compounds for campers. Pretty much a good idea in most of Central America. Toyota World Runners seem to be having good experiences.

I can see the 4 Runner in either the 2024 "Old School" model, or the proposed 2025 "New School" model can appeal to each for many different reasons. I purchased what I wanted and will work for me, you will have to do what works for you. There is no right, or wrong here. Good Luck on your choice. :iagree:

I was in Akumal with my family in January near where a man and women were killed on the beach in Tulum (just south of Akumal). Woman was an american tourist. It's a druggie hangout, but still a sad situation. Didn't make much news in the USA.

And - incidentally I (and my family) were robbed in Cancun - by the police. Classic gringo pull over, threaten to take me to jail if I didn't give them money. Pretty par for the course in Cancun. I gave the asshat about $20. Harder part is explaining to a 4 year old that the cops are the bad guys. Mexico was great - I love it. People are mostly wonderful, hard working, good people. They have a shit situation.

I don't know how they manage the factories around the cartels running half the country. But - it's probably cheaper to pay cartel than the UAW. And Mexico is doing better and better at manufacturing. Maybe it's a wash. There's a lot of risk from cartels, but I'm not sure where else Toyota can go for manufacturing that is as good as Mexico.

There are so many videos online of Mexican cops pulling over gringos and asking for money. The usual "you didn't stop at that stop sign" then they want $1000. It seems to last 30+minutes. Most of the Youtubers stick to the "give me a ticket and let's go to the police station". As soon as the cop sees he's being filmed they start covering up their name and face and back off. Best to have a camera pointed at the driver's window and you can get cards off the internet in Spanish that cite the anti police corruption act and the number to report these things. You hand that to the cop and say he's being filmed and ask for an official ticket and they always back down.

Last week a 45 year old woman from LA (living in Cancun) was killed on the beach in Tulum when a drug dealer from Belize got in a shootout with a local Mexican drug dealer at a pretty nice beach club in the hotel section of the second Tulum beach. Tulum was great 10-15 years ago now the drug dealers there are battling for turf and people are getting caught in the cross fire.

Lots of stories of tourists being violently robbed by the police at 2 am in Playa Del Carmen when walking home from bars. They empty your wallet and steal your phone and sometimes rough you up.

All that being said I still plan on buying a retirement home there and renting it out. Staying a few months of the year as the income tax benefits are great for a Canadian. There are nice gated communities, one with a golf course near Akumal. I have been to this area 15 times and never had a problem driving around the Yucatan, maybe just lucky but I'm not out at bars at 2 am.

If you started making a list of things that happen in the States, school shootings, parade shootings, gang shootings and some of the police actions especially with blacks most people would be terrified to travel around the US.

Pricing was released for the LC250. $55,950 for the 1958 version, LC is $62,000 and first edition is $75,000.

MPG is 22 city and 25 highway.

Should give a little insight into the 4Runner hybrid coming.

I'm struggling with why I'd want to blow $75K on a loaded LC when I can grab a Overtrail+ GX550 for perhaps less than $5K more...

In my case - I wasn't even really pulled over. It was at the checkpoint on the south end of the hotel zone. The one here: Google Maps

In a line of cars and they singled us out to pull out of line. Then claimed the "speed camera" caught us going too fast. (There's no camera). I've been there a bunch of times. I said - we both know how this works - I have about $20USD with me, you can take it or we can go to the police station. I had more money, just wasn't going to give it to him.

It did catch me off guard though. I had been through that checkpoint a dozen times and not been hassled. And the federal checkpoints on the main highway have always been legit in my experience. They just stop you on the way through occasionally and ask where you're going, maybe check passports, and send you on your way. When they pulled me off that time I wasn't expecting the shakedown. Usually it's a traffic stop. And I had my kids in the car. That's the tricky part. Without kids I probably would have just said "vamos a resolverlo en la comisaría" on principle. But $20 is just easier than negotiating it for half an hour.

But everyone there knows the game. I'm not sure why we do the whole performance. Ideally - just charge a fake "toll" to pass. That's what they do in the Philippines. It's more efficient. Mexican cops need some guidance on how to do it better.

I'm not super worried about violent crime there. Murder rate is lower in Cancun than places like Baltimore or Detroit. It happens a lot of places. But the police corruption is a real issue that they need to get under control. It costs a lot of tourism dollars. Mexico can't afford for Cancun to start to look like Jamaica or Honduras. There is a breaking point where tourists stop coming and/or the tourists who spend more money stop coming. Obvious open roadside police extortion is not a good idea.

One interesting fact is that apple maps was telling us to go around and come back from the north. I thought it was weird because that's another hour or so of driving to go through Cancun city and back around because we were staying near punta nuziac. Should have listened to Apple Maps. Not sure what the process is for identifying when they're scamming tourists, but it works if you follow its guidance.

The LC250 has a smaller cargo area than the 4Runner. 37.5 cu ft vs 47.5 cu ft. Will be interesting to see what the numbers are with the second row folded down but I can't see the LC250 catching the 4R even with the seats down. The exterior is bigger by 2 inches in each direction but less ground clearance and interior cargo room.

This is another vote for the GX550 Overtrail personally with 46.5 cu ft supposedly. That hybrid system in the LC really eats into the cargo space (much like how it also jacks up the Sequoia).

22/25 estimated city/highway mpg with that 2.4L hybrid setup. Nice. At the same time as a monstrous 465 lb-ft of torque all the way down at 1700RPM. Those are some nice numbers. I wonder if a future 4Runner with hybrid would eek out another 1mpg without the full-time 4WD. Assuming these prove reliable, it could be a very nice upgrade one day. Not to mention getting a 1700W or so inverter thanks to the hybrid setup. I would like to lazily run electric cooking equipment off my camping vehicle.

I am still awaiting confirmation that you can use the inverter with the engine off, i.e draining the hybrid battery. Would be great if you can run a fridge off it.

Multiple MSRP dealers here. One wants a deposit though. One is saying spring for the Landcruiser grade one is saying Summer. I'm kind of believing the Summer. Really would like to see what the 4Runner with the Hybrid looks like and runs.

I wonder when we'll hear something.

Most likley between June and September, but don't rule out yet another delay...

2026 is not out of the question with this track record...
