Universal Oxygen Sensor

If a universal one would do the trick, why would they make the make, model, and year specific ones? I would go with the denso specifies for your truck.

I am not to lazy to use a crimper but I wouldn't cheap out and use it. That is like buying second hand underwear. (unless your into that stuff).

But seriously. You would have to make a crimp connection that was good enough not to induce in additional resistance into the circuit.

You would also have to make it water tight so that the connection doesn't fail over time due to corrosion from weather, air, and dissimilar metals.

You will also have the vibration factor where the wire could shake back and forth at the crimp connection causing fatigue and then a break in the circuit.

Fwiw, I about a denso model specific A/F sensor of Ebay for $45.

All the different years and transmissions use different oxygen sensors or an a/f sensor. What are the odds that your universal is going to work and function correctly without a code? I think you'll end up buying the right one later and/or having other issues.

When I replaced my sensors, I bough Densos without the connector for much cheaper that the same ones with the connectors. You cut off the existing connectors and crimp them onto the new sensors. I soldered mine and it worked fine.

Yeah, I bought it. I figure I will guinea pig it for everyone. I can return it if it doesn't work for 30 days.

Wow! That's cheap. I paid at least $50 each a few years back..I'd definately buy two and replace both.:wow:

Depending on your year, you will need a different one for the front and back. Or maybe it is that way for all years. But for mine, you need flanged up front and threaded in the back. So check it out before you pull the trigger!

Definitely a good deal. Like I said, after I guinea pig them for a little, maybe I will be able to finally give back to this forum...

Both the front and back sensors are the same part for mine.

Let me clear one thing up. If you buy a DENSO universal sensor, there is no difference in the sensor itself from the model-year specific sensors. The difference is only that you have to re-use the sensor-side plug and wires that are on your truck and make four new connections to the wires off the universal sensor. I would not trust a crimp job for this mission-critical weather exposed connection. I would solder and cover with heat-shrink tubing.

I am more than capable of creating a reliable connection. I choose not to because I have owned my truck for almost 13 years and have replaced a grand total of two sensors. It is worth the extra cost to not have to wonder if my connections are the cause of a MIL and have to go through an extra step of troubleshooting. Plus having a brand-new plug connector is a plus.

But if the connections are solid, a DENSO universal will perform identically to the model-specific type.
