I got the dreaded 71 CEL code

Hey guys my CEL came on yesterday and I disconnected the battery for a while and it went off til tonight. Got the 71 code (EGR malfunction). I plan on checking all the hoses out but if I find nothing there what are some common areas to check first. I guess obviously the EGR valve but what are some more common causes for this code. Thanks.

Oddly enough the light went off by itself. It came back on a few different times but is currently off. I haven't found a pattern, like rain or extreme cold so it definitely has me stumped. I've looked over vacuum lines and haven't seen anything obvious.
