A two in one unit. Might be handy on the trail. Set it up on a nice whip in the truck and handheld when you are out. I like this idea and the price is not bad either. Just wonder what the range is? Can anyone shed some light on this or others like it?

There is a specs chart listed to the right in that ad--that might give the info you are looking for. I know the regular Motorola-type walkies are up to at least 22 miles (line of sight). I would think this would be at least that good when used as a portable. I'd do a search for reviews online.

I have one that I connect to a Little Wil magnetic antenna. It's great for trail comm and I like having the weather repeater hotkeyed. I don't know what the max range is, I haven't found that yet, but it's good for at least a couple miles and that's in the canyons. Line of sight is surely farther.

On the battery pack with just the stubby antenna, it's very very short range, I'd say 100-150 yards in ideal conditions. But I can take it with me when I leave the truck to spot a buddy, and it works ok for that.

I really like that I can put it and the antenna in storage when I'm not using them. I think those great big CB whips are nothing more than giant signs indicating the location of some choice pawnable CB equipment.

Around here CB's are mandatory on a lot of logging roads because you have to announce your position so you don't get creamed by an 18 wheeler full of logs travelling at 60 MPH.

I don't know anything about that particular model, but I have four of their higher end handheld radios and the quality is top notch. I know they got their start, as company, building CB's back in the 70's before branching out into two-ways, blue tooth and action sports cameras. So, I'd assume they know what they're doing. (I have no affiliation with Midland Radio, but I did work with them a couple years ago as a technology vendor. I helped design and build that website you're looking at )

HAMs cost money, they are NOT cheap, you do have to be licensed, you do have to find the time to take the test. Most people dont want bother with the cost and time to get a HAM.
IMHO it is NOT worth the time and expense vs a CB and many others feel the same.

I have this radio, range is BAD with the flex antenna, but I bought it as a "spotter radio" and works GREAT for that, we did try the range in the city, straight line with the flex antenna we did about 10-12 block range, that was sttraight line, no mountains/hills in the way lol
I wouldnt buy it new, you can find them used for about $10-50 in great shape. IIRC I paid $25 for mine with an extra battery pack.

I just got one, about 80$ from Amazon.

My take on it is pretty much like all the others. It is a well made radio, and the sound is good - at least on the weather station. I haven't been able to talk to anyone on the CB yet using the rubber ducky antenna that came with it. I tried last night to break into the clearest conversation I have heard on it yet. They didn't respond, so I don't think it's getting out very good.

I am currently studying for a HAM license, and for those that say it's too expensive look at the handhelds on Amazon. You can get licensed and buy a ham radio for less than I payed for this CB.

where you going to get licensed, a HAM radio, an antenna and coax for under $80???

04rnr; Licensing is $15. Or, I should say, testing is $15. You get your Amateur Radio license only after you pass the test.

On Amazon, a handheld Ham radio can be had for as little as $40. Maybe even $30. But you're right, it's not a cheap hobby. And if you went with a handheld, you'd be stuck with the same limited transmission cababilities as we have with this Midland CB.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm not a fool to think this thing is going to reach 30 miles or more as it sits. Maybe it is possible under the perfect conditions but I would not hold my breath.

I have looked at the HAM's and also thinking about that too. Only thing is the other people have to have one also.

We used allot of HF/VHF for work and they do work but they can be a pain in the butt at times also.

Just checking out options. From what I'm reading the European models have allot more power in the CB side. SO....... We will see what ends up in the truck when it is all said and done.

its good that you are looking at both, IMHO it would be great to have both, both have postives and negitives, BUT,, most people are going to have CBs, at least in this area.
What do the people have that you will be wheeling with ?

It seems in So-Cal it is CB's or so I have seen. Going back east to my other place I'm not sure a CB will do much good because you are in the Middle of BFE in MO. So we will see. I have a few things I want done first before this. IE, Break job.
