He has an 05 Tacoma double cab with 189k on it. Got a notice about a recall to repair frame rust. He said they were to clean the rust and apply an epoxy protectant. When they checked his out they found a fist sized hole in the frame below the driver seat. They told him his truck was unsafe to drive. They gave him a rental car, not from the dealer, but from Enterprise, but it had to be a Toyota and they are going to replace the frame on his truck. They said it would be 4-6 weeks just to get the frame in. I think they told him if he wants to replace anything involved with taking it apart such as shocks, etc they would only charge for parts on those items.

Yeah they have extended the rust recall to the 2nd gen Tacoma as well.

Does anyone know if some regulatory agency requires Toyota to do this without regard to age or mileage?
This is the most impressive "we made a mistake, we will fix it" from a car company I know of. I have been aware of this for some time. I know TSB's are issued for non safety related issues. Clearly a rotting frame is a safety issue. I do not believe GM or Chrysler would do anything other than claim a warranty time limit and issue a small voucher towards the purchased of a new vehicle. Maybe the new Ford would shoulder the burden and do the Toyota thing.
A vehicle with almost 200,000 miles? Extraordinary.

Could have sworn there's a recall already or in the works that covered 3rd gens.
The frames are actually very identical to the 4th & 5th gen 4Runners. Keep in mind that the 2nd Gen Tacomas are J120 & J150 platform vehicle which have similar design to the frame that underpins the 4Runners and FJ Cruisers. While made in different plants, the materials they call for are probably similar from an engineering standpoint as the platform will dictate a lot of that.
After we get the driveshaft clunck recall?

They did that..
they do NOT have the same rust problems.
You will occasionally see a 4Runner that was neglected with a rusted away frame.
You would routinely see well maintained tacomas with fist sized holes in the frame (or when the the turck was lifted, the frame broke in 2)
Very few 96 - 04 Tacomas survived rust areas without their frames rotting away, most 96-02 4Runners did not die because of their frames.
I believe the materials used were the cause of the rusted frames on the tacomas and the supplier (dana) was the one actually footing the bill for the recalls (Report: Dana coughs up $25M to Toyota over rusty Tacoma frames - Autoblog)
Also factor in the fact the 96 - 02 runners have a boxed frame and the tacoma's have a c channel frame, I believe it's safe to conclude 96-02 4Runners do not share the same frame problems as 96-04 tacomas.
I don't know as much about the newer generations, but since 4Runners are manufactured in Japan and the Tacomas are built in Mexico, I would have to believe they still have different suppliers for the frame.

When I was shopping for 3rd and 4th gens a year ago, I found so many that were seriously rusted out. I've also seen a few pictures here of frames that rusted through where the rear suspension link meets the frame, and that came apart.
It seems to be a common problem for both to have major rust on frames around here.
Dana Corp incorrectly made the frames for the Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia, and are being replaced in cases of severe rust.
The 4Runner has always been made in Japan by Toyota. So unless Toyota ever decides that the 4Runner frames were made incorrectly in-house, I don't expect we'll ever see a frame recall for them.

It was some dude that believed a Toyota salesman that was talking out of his ass that posted that thread. He was expecting Toyota to install a frame on a used 4Runner he got knowing it had some rust issues.
It's good to hear they are recalling the Tacoma's. The second gens have had some pretty bad quality issues over the years.
Right, but my point is those trucks are still on the road, your version of "rusted out" may be different than mine.
The tacomas that were recalled had frames that are unsafe and would literally break in 2 if they continued to be used. Having a control arm mount rust off after 15+ years of neglect is not the same thing as having a less than 10 year old frame break in two.
