I've done quite a few engine swaps, but I have never thought about doing a swap on your '88 4Runner..

This is a great idea. If you're going to use your 4Runner as a tractor, I mean.
OP, there's a couple common swaps for first gen trucks. None of them are easy. Check out the Toyota 5VZE, 3RZ, 7MGE, and the Ford and Chevy smallblocks. Check out the "swap" section at Yotatech, read some threads, lots of good data in there.

OP is in CA, where we have emission control regulations for street driven vehicles. He will need to use a motor from the same year or newer, with all smog controls from the donor vehicle. It can be done, just a matter of time and money.
OP, of you will be spending that time and money, make it worthwhile, and put on a nice 8-cyl with CARB-approved headers and all that good stuff.
