I've done quite a few engine swaps, but I have never thought about doing a swap on your '88 4Runner..

Have you ever thought about doing an engine swap on my 84, it really needs it.

This is a great idea. If you're going to use your 4Runner as a tractor, I mean.

OP, there's a couple common swaps for first gen trucks. None of them are easy. Check out the Toyota 5VZE, 3RZ, 7MGE, and the Ford and Chevy smallblocks. Check out the "swap" section at Yotatech, read some threads, lots of good data in there.

OP is in CA, where we have emission control regulations for street driven vehicles. He will need to use a motor from the same year or newer, with all smog controls from the donor vehicle. It can be done, just a matter of time and money.

OP, of you will be spending that time and money, make it worthwhile, and put on a nice 8-cyl with CARB-approved headers and all that good stuff.

I think I would go for a supercharged 3.4 to use in your 88. You will pretty much have to find a complete donor to make the swap smog legal.
