All that effort to keep it original with Toyota parts and they throw in a LS and GM trans :crazy: There goes the Toyota reliability that the TLC is infamous for! Cool ride otherwise.

I mean lets be honest though. Once you start adding bumpers and what not to a 1FZ , it gets a little rough in the speed & MPG department. Worse if you add in altitude.

Not arguing needing more power, I’d 100% throw in a V8 but at least keep it Toyota to keep reliability up to par. You may not be in the 600hp range like the superharged LS, but you can supercharge a Toyota V8 and still get plenty of usable power for that fat pig.

I literally screamed that at my computer when I watched that video. Sorry, but if I'm "overlanding" days out from help, the last thing I want is to be in a vehicle that is lacking the parts that are the whole ****ing reason the LC's and other Toyotas are so revered. Then again, Joe Rogan is a millionaire so I'm sure he can just helicopter out from his overlanding trip to Burning Man.

i don't fault him for choosing a LS motor...
They are literally found everywhere in the US, and fairly proven.
Now I rather choose a turbo diesel v8 that is found in non-US market land cruisers, and while they are bullet proof, I'm pretty sure your regular shade treee mechanic has no idea how to service them...so pretty much you have to service them yourself....
His other option would be to drop in the v8 and transmission from a us spec, current lc200, but that motor/tranny and ecu is not a drop in affair.
So the LS motor does not make sense for a toyota enthusiast, but it does make sense if you are trying to resto-mod a 30 year old vehicle.

Wikipedia for the F engine also vaguely states some similarities but no sources. I had been told the engine was originally used for agricultural pumps that GM made, and then licensed the design to Toyota. I forget who told me that, it may of been from the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum or just some random guy online... though I've had a few people mention that the F engine is a rip off at a minimum of the GM I6. IIRC all the engine internals convert to round imperial units, and I think the fuel pump I used to have on my FJ40 was directly from a Chevy engine.
Anyways, most of that is me not remembering things entirely except from limited conversations with people telling me the engine has domestic roots, which the little info I can find online seems to agree with that haha
EDIT: Some other google searches brought up similar info, again all somewhat vague and claiming that the Chevy 235 I6 came after the 2F, that the 2F was a direct knock off of the 235, that Toyota licensed and ancient I6 in the 30s and that legacy carried into the F engine, etc.

Interesting reads for sure. It is certainly a question though if these engines are as closely related as cousins, as you posted first. It appears that maybe some engineers from Toyota copied some aspects of the GM top end, but changed it some.
Likely nobody will ever know how Toyota came up with the F engine.
