Are they rebuildable? If I can just order a caliper rebuild kit, then that would be a cheap way to rule it out. And I might end up doing the conversion but since I would have to buy new rims and tires it might be a while.

It wasn't line up with the paint marks either when I tore it apart so it must have slipped since it was running well for a week.

I got it running. It turns out that the machine marks on the cam sprockets and crank sprockets are not to be trusted. I line it up by the paint on them and it started right up. Thanks for the help.
