All sound advice but I'll add that it will also depend on the tent itself. The only ones I'm aware of that you can mount straight to the rails are the 2 person soft shell tents. I was able to do it with a Tepui Kukenam but not with a CVT Rainier or any of the hardshells I had.

The Thule bars are plenty strong and the problem with what you've posted is that (1) whatever "more useful" you get out of them is lost when you cover them up with a tent, (2) they actually sit pretty low which makes mounting the tent to the bars a *****, (3) the Thule bars are super easy to pop...
