Final word on RTT on stock roof rails.

All sound advice but I'll add that it will also depend on the tent itself. The only ones I'm aware of that you can mount straight to the rails are the 2 person soft shell tents. I was able to do it with a Tepui Kukenam but not with a CVT Rainier or any of the hardshells I had.

Final word on RTT on stock roof rails.

When I mounted my first tent directly to the roof rails, one of the bolts did end up wearing a slight semi-circle through the paint and that did eventually start to rust a little. It all could have been avoided by using slightly shorter bolts though. However, if I could do it over again, I'd...

    Hood protector for 2016 4Runner...

Also doesn't work worth a damn. I had mine since I bought it. 50,000 miles later I decided to just get rid of it. If you like the look of them, go for it. If you're expecting it to actually deflect bugs or anything else, don't bother.

Burning smell in traffic on low mileage SR5?

I thought I read somewhere that it had something to do with exhaust hangers. I would always get the smell when driving up forest roads for miles. Not so much anymore.

    Roof top tent experience

I've had a RTT on my 4Runner every day for the past 18 months. I never take it off just because I really have no place to put it. If there was an MPG or performance hit, I haven't noticed it. As far as the Skyline specifically, I will say that, in my opinion, you should get a hardshell if you...

DIY Easy-removal/Quick release RTT bracket/mount ideas

My Thule bars are pretty easy to pop right on and off ... They just stay attached to the tent. Don't know how much easier it could get.

Roof top tent (RTT) on factory rails. It's doable

The Thule bars are plenty strong and the problem with what you've posted is that (1) whatever "more useful" you get out of them is lost when you cover them up with a tent, (2) they actually sit pretty low which makes mounting the tent to the bars a *****, (3) the Thule bars are super easy to pop...

Roof top tent (RTT) on factory rails. It's doable

It definitely has its pros and cons. At first, I was definitely all about it. Now? ... I don't know. I do know my wife loves and it gets her out more so that's nice. If it were just me, I'd honestly just rather have a small ground tent and maybe just an awning to pull over it. So long as my wife...

    LawnDart's Build Thread

Hey Lawndart - I saw the Overland video and I'm curious, what mounts are you using above the head unit for things like phones or whatever?

    Budget Roof rack option.....

I think he meant to say Rola. Rola Racks. ROLA - Roof Top Carriers

Final word on RTT on stock roof rails.

It's fine. I've had a Tepui kukenam mounted directly to the factory rails (NOT cross bars) and now have a CVT Rainier mounted on Thule bars. Anyone who says you need a roof rack is just not thinking it through. All aftermarket roof racks use the same 8 mounting points as the stock rails and...

Is it just me? Or do we not have Auto Headlights?

Second this. My TRD Pro also has auto headlights. I'm not 100% sure but I think it's standard on Limited and TRD Pros while it's an option on the other models.
