WFO9 Supercharger Install and results thread

wfo9have they dyno'ed ???? man it must be nice with your mods and 4.56 gears. Either way congrats brudda... definitely sitting over here jellying on your S/C

Can’t really hear the whine...

As for the 4.56 gears, wouldn’t that make slight applications of throttle (thinking when on the trail with rocks) more touchy??

I have not dynoed it yet, No real desire to do so unless I get it custom tuned and then it will most likely get some numbers during that process. I'm really only concerned with drivability... and that is the only reason I would change up the tune (not to get more power). Just to eliminate some tq mgt and bump the timing here and there.

Pretty confident in saying it is roughly 370 flywheel hp now. I come to this conclusion from airflow data and past experience... 30-40% more power overall. It pretty much hauls ass for a big boat...

Not at all, quite the opposite actually. I hope to put a 2.x doubler in it some day. Gearing is a dream come true on technical trails and adds tons of control. I've got 2.28*2.28*5.29 in my crawler and I'm going to 2.28*4.1*5.29, but it is a manual on 37s. The extra 4.1 really only comes into play on the most extreme rock crawling scenarios. Stuff you would never dream of attempting in a 5th gen. The option of the extra 2.x would make my 5th gen with 4.56 perfect on moderate level crawling trails.

As far as the SC goes.. The lower gear you are in.. (4Lo first gear...) the more you have to mash the pedal to get the bypass to close. So you really feel nothing in 4Lo unless you get agressive with the pedal. There is nothing touchy at all. I've found the 4Lo experince very postively impacted.

What is your cruising RPM at 70 mph with the 4.56 gears and 34's? Thanks for posting all of this info, it is very helpful.

Answered my own question by calling Magnuson. Salesperson told me that a preorder list has already been filled, and full production will be in March 2018.

This thing will sell fast.
Thought they were gonna email everyone on the list that signed up for it. Apparently not because they posted this today. I didn't get an email.

Neither did i, but i did email them and add my name to the list of first available superchargers when full production begins. I asked how long i might expect to be waiting, but haven’t had a response to that question. I did get two emails confirming my name on the list, whatever that means.

I’ll check back in March to see what’s up. I’m in no hurry, just gives me more time to save $$ and learn more about the unit from those who have it installed before I do. Both good things.

Quick update: i contacted the local shop that is listed on Magnuson’s site as an installer, just to get a quote for the work. Not only did they send a quote for the install and coding, but they also said they confirmed with Magnuson that they would receive the unit in mid February.

Do you mind sharing the quoted price?

Thanks!

You guys care to share it with the rest of us?...

Sure, but I can’t say whether or not the price I was quoted is the Magnuson price, or if it’s the price the shop was able to negotiate since they work frequently with Magnuson.

Since the price isn’t listed on Magnuson’s site yet, I have no idea what they plan to charge individuals who buy directly from them. Maybe the price is already out there somewhere else, in which case I’m being over sensitive.

But...with that caveat out of the way, the shop quoted me $5695 for the unit, and $1200 for the install and coding. Seems very reasonable to me, and I’m happy to pay for the labor to have it done right and have a shop that stands behind the work.

Weird that the quote for our vehicle is $700 higher than the FJ kit and ours does not have in IC. I am definitely going to be in on this upgrade :lookout:

As i understand it, the quote is $700 higher than the kit for the previous generation FJ engine (2007-2009), not the most recent version. In 2010 modifications were made to that engine, so the quote for the 5th gen 4Runner kit should be the same for the 2010+ FJs.

Hard to say if the price increase is due to an increased complexity in the engine/coding, or perhaps the lack of any other kit out there. There is no TRD kit for the 2010+ FJ/4Runner.

There is something going on with the tune in first (and maybe... second gear). It runs fanatic in the higher gears (like what you can simulate on a dyno), but there is some type of enrichment or torque management issue in first. I'm going to send some logs to magnuson and see if we can get to the bottom of it. It only comes into play when really getting on it...

In summary, the ECU still does some goofy stuff where throttle and pedal don't match up, but there is so much more power that it feels satisfying most of the time.

Did you get these gremlins worked out?
