I went back to it today and tried a dozen times to stuff wires in different spots and get it to fit in differently with no luck. I ended up cutting of the bottom lip of the installation kit and it worked perfectly. I got the panel back on with no problem and the motorized face opens and closes...

The car had a JBL Synthesis system with the 6-disc changer in it. Not navigation or anything. I used the Metra 95-8210 kit that Crutchfield sent me with the stereo. Looks like the same one Best Buy would sell me.

Never had that issue in a 2007 4runner with the JBL. We got it about 5 years ago and it had the factory head unit until this week when I replaced it with navigation.
